Later years

[edit]

The article stops quite abruptly in 1882. Theal lived for another 37 years. Is this because of a paucity of sources? There are, written at same time and not citing each other:

  • a long article by dr Anna Böeseken in Dictionary of South African Biography vol.IV, popular-historic in style (no footnotes), but citing her sources, including an unpublished Master's thesis at UCT.
  • a scholarly article by Christopher Saunders: George McCall Theal and Lovedale, History in Africa, Vol. 8 (1981), pp. 155-164, Cambridge University Press, https://www.jstor.org/stable/3171513. The article is not restricted to Theal's years at Lovedale, but also discusses the influence of Lovedale on Theal's oeuvre.
