American championships

[edit]

Rapée won 25 nationals, as they are so often called; now "North American titles" in his ACBL HOF citation.[1]

We list 24 under Bridge accomplishments--all but his earliest, 1936, i know from Truscott 1996. The 24 were victories in annual series whose histories have been incorporated in North American Bridge Championships--at least, if they didn't originate there. The 1936 win is now missing from the online NABC Winners database: George Rapee (and from our list). He didn't change his name a la Helen Martin White Sobel Smith and there is no hit for Rapée with his diacritic mark. So i infer, either the event is not recognized-NABC or the database development is incomplete for recognized-NABC winners, probably in early years. (ACBL was established late in 1937 but recognizes many earlier national or American titles as part of its NABC history. Its HOF citation of Rapée does report "25 North American titles" for him but that may be casual substitution of "North American" for "national"--rather than NABC™ or NABC® as the case may be.)

If Rapée won in 1936 at some individuals or teams competition then he has a remarkable distinction for one of the leaders in number of championships: not one at pairs! The 24 that we list are 2 individuals and 22 teams.
