Air Speed Record[edit]

Sections "Schneider Trophy" and "Breaking the 400mph barrier" both document Stainforth's achievment of the air speed record at 407.5 mph, though apparently on two different dates, 10 September 1929 and 29 September 1931.

I think the section "Breaking the 400mph barrier" should be re-written to correctly describe the record. The "Schneider Trophy" section is not really necessary - the first sentence of this section would be better included at the end of the introductory paragraph under "Career", which already mentions Stainforth serving with High Speed Flight. --Romney yw (talk) 04:33, 21 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Further question: the article states that fuel was a "mixture of petrol, methanol and ethyl". Ethyl is not correct by itself - was it ethyl alcohol? For naming consistency, we should strictly use "methanol and ethanol" or "methyl and ethyl alcohols", but this level of technical accuracy probably isn't that important here.... --Romney yw (talk) 11:18, 21 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

The correct date for the 400 mph record is the 29th in 1931, as the 10th in 1929 was his lower record in the Gloster VI Andy Dingley (talk) 23:10, 21 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Stainforth School[edit]

Whilst the text lists Weymouth Secondary School for Stainforth, there was another Secondary School that he attended, Harrow County School for Boys, located in Harrow Mdx. Attesting to this fact is the Stained Glass picture of the Supermarine Aircraft displayed over the Schools Main enterance. Inset is a picture of Stainforth with the legand saying "Presented by Supermarine, World Air Speed record, etc, etc." I attended this school just before WW2 and we, the students, were very proud of this man and his plane and many went on to join the RAF, myself included.

The window at Harrow County School for Boys is actually referred to as the "Boothman Window". This is after John Nelson Boothman who was also part of the Schneider Trophy winning team alongside Stainforth. It was Boothman who attended Harrow County School for Boys, not Stainforth.
