Renaming Proposal

[edit]

The official and historic name of this building is the Glebe of Fairfax Parish, Virginia. I proposed to rename this article The Glebe of Fairfax Parish. I welcome comments. Argos'Dad 18:49, 25 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Argos'Dad. Thanks for inviting me here. Renaming the article could certainly be done by a "move" of this article to the target name, preserving its edit history. You or anyone would be able to make the move without discussion, actually, but it is better to discuss it first. And there is a wp:RM requested move process which could be started to get more input and achieve a final decision, which is definitely recommended if there is any controversy likely or if there have been previous moves of a given article.
But first, could you point to any webpages or online-available documents that establish the official and historic name, or explain about off-line sources or otherwise explain? And I see that the article, started back in 2008, could now be improved by adding from the official NRHP nomination documents, which should be available now from the state of Virginia's historic preservation department. I'll add reference(s). Cheers, --doncram 19:20, 25 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I agree with Doncram - if the name is so established I have no problems with the move. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 19:24, 25 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
There are a number of official documents and indicia of the name. The simplest to point to is the Arlington County historic marker that is in front of the house. pictured here. Another fact to consider is that when the Glebe house of Fairfax Parish, Virginia was first established in 1775, there was no Arlington County. That name came into use in 1920. So, I think the article name should be The Glebe of Fairfax Parish with a redirect from the current title.
The reason I didn't utilize the WP:RM process is that I think this proposal will be uncontroversial. If anyone disagrees, I will happily use that process for broader input. Thank you all for your responses. Argos'Dad 19:44, 25 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I created the article and have no objection to the change; in fact I would support. Go ahead and do it. clariosophic (talk) 21:05, 25 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Changing the name is fine with me as long as the 1) NRHP name is indicated as "The Glebe" and kept the same in the NRHP infobox heading, and 2) the same name cannot be claimed for another "The Glebe" such as The Glebe (Amherst, Virginia), which is also an NRHP site without an article. The latter is extremely unlikely (far fetched?) unless it was Fairfax Parish Church in Amherst County, Virginia. If there is another one in the world, we will be adding (Arlington, Virginia) to the new name. The reason that (Arlington, Virginia) was added was probably to distinguish it from other "The Glebe"s, which is a typical convention in the wikiproject. I would not imagine that anyone had the intention of renaming the house. Thanks for notifying me to allow me Argos'Dad! KudzuVine (talk) 23:40, 25 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
From Arlington County, Virginia, The area that now forms Arlington County was originally part of Fairfax County in the Colony of Virginia. Amherst County, Virginia, is near Lynchburg, Virginia, far to the south. See also Fairfax Parish, Virginia, which says, Drawn over today's civil boundaries, Fairfax Parish would include all of the City of Alexandria, Arlington County, the City of Falls Church, the City of Fairfax, and the western and northern areas of Fairfax County.

I really don't care about the move that has been discussed, but if moved it must be done properly to save/move edit history. I observed a move being implemented just now by redirect and creation of a new article, and I am undoing that, directing the new article back to this one. At this point, could a proper wp:RM request be started, please. --doncram 22:57, 4 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

To Argos'Dad: You could have used the "Move" tab to make the move you wanted, from this article's page. However, now that a different article was created at the target page, the Move cannot be done by you. It requires an administrator's assistance now. I take it you would prefer the article to be about the 500-acre farm and the house, combined, which is okay by me I suppose. However, the edit history should be preserved by moving the existing article, and this Talk page discussion should be preserved by moving this Talk page, rather than hiding the old and creating new article and Talk page. It's not a big problem to fix. Can be done by following the wp:RM process now. Thanks. --doncram 23:14, 4 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

The Glebe (Arlington, Virginia)The Glebe of Fairfax Parish – Request move from "The Glebe (Arlington, Virginia)" to "The Glebe of Fairfax Parish" on behalf of editor Argos'Dad. I personally think the move is fine, if followed by revision of the article to clarify it is about both the 500-acre farm and about the house. The previous/current name is about the house, by my understanding. This was discussed in section above. Administrative help now needed because the move was attempted by redirect and copy-paste that inadvertently separated the edit history. doncram 12:10, 5 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
