By 1970, Western art music had come to include virtually every possible sound. There was serial music, stochastic music, aleatoric music, musique concrète, electronic noise compositions - and Coates' string quartets with tone clusters and glissandi were "ahead of her time"? Her date of birth is given as 1938-10-10 in all major works of reference like Grove, MGG or KDG Komponisten der Gegenwart (via Munzinger). And what's more, it is the date that was indicated on her own website (available at the Internet Archive). Isn't it a bit premature to change the YOB based on one single blogpost? Yes, I have read the information is her daughter's opinion, but what if she is in error? Gloria Coates is dead now and can no longer object. I think that whilst there is uncertainty both dates should be included with an explanatory note. I tried to add such a note, but someone else removed it, although I see a different note has now been added. Round about the time of her "official" 80th birthday there was speculation that she was actually older than that, so I suspect the daughter's claim is correct. This talk is for all to understand, - next time you want to have something changed, please provide context, such as a diff, or a copy of the sentence.
