Time Derivative Notation[edit]

I don't really get, why in the time derivatives small q is replaced by big Q. I think it should be small q there, as well. In the later lines it's small q again, but the notation changes from $x_{i}$ to $x_{l,r}$ ?

Can anyone shed some light on this?
