I like this song, but find the "broke broke" part in the radio version distasteful (they could've censored it better). Either way, glad to review this GAN within the next week. Ippantekina (talk) 08:49, 19 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Ippantekina Many thanks for reviewing this article, though let's hope the large size doesn't prevent you from finishing within this month! --K. Peake 09:29, 19 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Lead and infobox[edit]

  • I would write it out as "New York City" instead of "NYC".
  • Are you sure since this is an infobox, not the body? --K. Peake 08:19, 20 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
  • I would mention when (and by whom) the record for the most downloads a week was broken; 2005 seems like a very long time ago for pop music standard.
  •  Not done unfortunately I can't find a source stating what song broke the record and/or when, plus it says "at the time" in the body anyway. --K. Peake 08:19, 20 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
  • Ray Charles's per MOS:'S.
  • "The song was named to year-end lists for 2005 by multiple publications" reads awkward; I would go for simple phrasing such as "Many publications included it on 2005 year-end lists".
  •  Done for the above --K. Peake 08:19, 20 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
  • "retrospective lists" you mean of the decade?
  •  Comment: there are various lists it has appeared on retrospectively, so merely adding the decade term would be misleading. --K. Peake 08:19, 20 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
  • "moving magazine covers appear alongside West and Jamie Foxx" West and Foxx
  •  Not done since Foxx is not his real surname --K. Peake 08:19, 20 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
  • If Jamie Foxx chose his stage name as such, referring to him by the last name "Foxx" is acceptable (like how we refer to Cary Grant as "Grant" for short, though his birth name is different). Ippantekina (talk) 12:53, 20 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
  • I can see where you are coming from with the point itself, but should this really apply here when he's only a featured artist? --K. Peake 13:40, 20 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
  • If Foxx's name appears frequently throughout the article, I believe it definitely helps with flow-- Ippantekina (talk) 06:05, 21 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
  • "West performed the song at the MTV Video Music Awards and Glastonbury Festival in 2005 and 2015" out of curiosity, did West not perform this song frequently on his tours (haven't skimmed the "Live performances" section yet)? Why such a big gap (10 years) between these two events?
  •  Comment: I couldn't find anything saying about it frequently performed on multiple tours, also I added these two because they are the most notable performances. --K. Peake 08:19, 20 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Background and recording[edit]

  • Very surprised to learn that West appreciated Brian's music through one of my favourite films!
  • "while watching 2004 film Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind" the 2004 film.
  •  Not done the album is one of the main subjects and can only be wikilinked in the lead --K. Peake 08:19, 20 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
  • That is not sound to me. Is there a MOS/guideline specifically saying so? Ippantekina (talk) 06:05, 21 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
  • Looking under the principles of WP:OVERLINK, it looks like I needn't link the album. --K. Peake 08:14, 23 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
  • I am not seeing which point you are directing to, but to me the album Late Registration is one of the "Relevant connections to the subject of another article" in the above MOS:UNDERLINK guide-- Ippantekina (talk) 09:02, 23 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
  • "creating confused reactions" confusion.
  • I don't think "craft" is a common verb for music production; consider replacing it with "create" or a more common word (ditto the lead).
  • Ludacris's
  •  Done for the above --K. Peake 08:19, 20 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
  • I would just mention that West created the beat at Ludacris's house and remove the speculation part regarding Foxx's role in the Ray Charles movie.
  •  Not done this is notable due to the later mention of West having watched Jamie Foxx in the film and because it provides more context on the recording period --K. Peake 08:19, 20 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
  • "the second of which was performed live by him early that year" is there a name of the concert/live festival etc. where he performed it?
  •  Done added The College Dropout touring --K. Peake 08:19, 20 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
  • Should "poppy" be in quotation marks?
  •  Comment: I didn't think so because this is one word; should I use quotation marks though or reword to something else? --K. Peake 08:19, 20 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
  • "cool" is informal for an encyclopedic tone.

More to come.. Ippantekina (talk) 05:25, 20 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Composition and lyrics[edit]

  • "The former prominently features" I would simply use "Gold Digger"
  • "the second of which ... It begins" confusing
  •  Done the begins part was easy by changing to the song, but how does my edit for the second of which look? --K. Peake 08:14, 23 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
  • Looks better, still I'd go simply "drum patterns reminiscent of..."; plus mention from which album is "Get Em High"-- Ippantekina (talk) 08:35, 23 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
  •  Done but is this correct grammar with handclaps before? --K. Peake 09:14, 23 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
  • "A synth coda is also included, as well as additional vocals by Plain Pat and Don C." The song also includes a synth coda and additional vocals...
  •  Not done this is overusage of the song --K. Peake 08:14, 23 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
  • Then "the track" or "it" or the title, because the existing sentence is confusing to follow. Ippantekina (talk) 08:30, 23 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
  • "West tells a tale about" West raps about/narrates
  • Link groupie and (I assume) prenup.
  • Shouldn't the lyrics be in present tense?
  •  Done for the above --K. Peake 08:14, 23 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Release[edit]

  • I do not see how significant the song's heavy rotation on one radio station (among many) is to this section.
  •  Comment: are you sure this isn't notable, as the source specifically mentions it and a director even made a comment?  Done --K. Peake 08:33, 24 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Reception[edit]

  • "the levels of talent separating West from that guy at the 7-Eleven" what does the critic mean by "that guy at the 7-Eleven"?
  • Honestly, there is no more context in the source so he probably means the difference between West and your everyday store worker. --K. Peake 09:12, 23 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
  • "going against the elaborate style of most of Late Registration" you can elaborate this more in the "Composition" section.
  •  Done if this works? --K. Peake 09:12, 23 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
  • "features "the odd sound" of Foxx's Oscar-winning impersonation of Charles, alongside the latter being sampled" confusing
  • "Matty G vastly preferred the singer's interpolation of Charles to him "aping Al Green" " some context is needed in relation to the Al Green comparison.
  • No song is mentioned, but I reworded it to make this clear that it was in the past if that's alright? --K. Peake 09:12, 23 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
  • The section reads like a disparate collection of opinions with quite many quotes. Some quotations are not exactly helpful i.e. "his wit", "Foxx ad-libbing", "calling for a chant", "smash" etc. Try grouping similar opinions together and paraphrase some quotes for flow.

Controversy[edit]

  • Briefly introduce who David Pryor (is this the politician?), Trena Steward and Lorenzo Pryor are.
  •  Done and it's not that one though plus they are introduced as his children already --K. Peake 09:12, 23 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Accolades[edit]

  • Link Shea Serrano
  • "To celebrate their 16 year anniversary in 2016" 16-year
  •  Done for the above --K. Peake 09:28, 23 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
  • "In 2014, NME listed the former" "the former" can be simply "it" or "the song" because it is not to be confused with "Superstition".
  •  Done but wrote "the track" since "songs" is used here --K. Peake 09:28, 23 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
  • "it received a nomination for Record of the Year." to whom did it lose? Ippantekina (talk) 03:04, 23 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Music video[edit]

  • "its frequent star Foxx" I don't know what this means.
  •  Comment: this means he frequently stars in the video; should I add a comma after Foxx and write "who is frequently present" instead or something similar? --K. Peake 09:42, 23 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
  • This song features Foxx as a vocalist so his presence is pretty much expected. I'd remove the whole phrase-- Ippantekina (talk) 10:20, 23 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
  •  Partly done only kept him being at the beginning --K. Peake 17:35, 23 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Commercial performance[edit]

  • Yes, but this is a group combining the operation of multiple labels including Def Jam Recordings, so being the third biggest hit of the group is notable. --K. Peake 09:42, 23 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
  • "biggest hit across the chart's 60 year history" 60-year history

Live performances[edit]

  • It may be helpful to note that the version West performed with Lennon in 2003 is not the same as the commercial version available today.
  • Used "early sparse version" if this makes it clear enough? --K. Peake 09:42, 23 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Media + Covers[edit]

  • Consider merging these two sections into one "Cover versions and media usage" section (or any title you find suitable).
  • Given the Automatic has covered this song many times, is there any reason given for the band's fondness of this song?
  • Not that I was able to find when looking up the band and "Gold Digger" on Google, unfortunately. --K. Peake 09:42, 23 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
  • Mention that Jack Johnson is a fictional character and the actor that portrayed this character.
  •  Partly done mentioned that he is a character but I can't find a source stating who plays him for the song --K. Peake 09:42, 23 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Rest of the article[edit]

  • Was this song released to radio anywhere? (Release history)
  • Not that I can find any sources for; even looked through archives of FMQB to no avail :( --K. Peake 09:42, 23 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
  • I found an R&R archive (p. 22) listing "Gold Digger" as one of pop and rhythmic adds for the week of July 5, 2005 (which also corresponds to the release date in the infobox) Ippantekina (talk) 10:15, 23 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
  • Why is there a link to Wiktionary in the External links section?
  •  Comment: are you sure if this should be removed since gold digger is a popular term the song capitalized on? --K. Peake 09:42, 23 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
  • I clicked on the Wiktionary link and it is a red link, so it is not specifically helpful. Ippantekina (talk) 10:15, 23 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
  • Incorrect usage of possessives is still there (i.e. "Charles' ")
  • References are generally reliable, except for Amazon; if you can find better alternatives, please do. Otherwise this won't affect the nomination.
  • Sorry, I could only find this ref for the France release. --K. Peake 09:42, 23 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Verdict[edit]

  • Ippantekina Thanks for reviewing this rather quickly; I have responded to everything and feel free to go over any disagreements! --K. Peake 09:42, 23 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
  • The remaining points include: the abbreviation of "NYC" in the infobox, the linking of Late Registration in the prose, the mention of the WGCI-FM radio station in the "Release" section, the "frequent star Foxx" wording, the radio date (I included a link to an R&R archive above), and the Wiktionary link. Ippantekina (talk) 10:26, 23 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
  • @Ippantekina: I have implemented all of these changes apart from the radio station, which I've explained above. --K. Peake 17:35, 23 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Re. the radio mention -- West's "Gold Digger," featuring Jamie Foxx, is a listener favorite in "power rotation" on WGCI, Green said. I get that this song was a smash on radio, but merely mentioning it was a listener favorite on one (among over 15,000 stations in the US) is rather trivial and does not establish notability. Specific numbers (like it being among the five highest audience impression) are more helpful. Ippantekina (talk) 02:25, 24 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

  • Ippantekina You are correct upon further consideration and I have removed the mention now; is this article good to go? --K. Peake 08:33, 24 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
  • Yes, I am passing this nomination. Great work-- Ippantekina (talk) 11:00, 24 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
