Move/rename[edit]

This is always known as the Golden Ears, period; the usage "Group" is a climbers' term only and to me, as someone raised within sight of these mountains on a daily basis, seems highly inappropriate and artificial. "Blanshard Range" is mentioned on the Richard Blanshard page but I find no mention of it in BCGNIS or Basemap; there are both a Blanshard Peak and a Mount Blanshard, with the latter redirecting here. I guess that's OK, the redirect taht is; but I don't like the title one little bit.Skookum1 (talk) 05:05, 1 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

further comments here, as per an inquiry from User:The High Fin SpermWhale. As Mount Blanshard is the official name of this massif, as opposed to the peaks (not a single mountain), which are part of it, this page should just be retitled Mount Blanshard.Skookum1 (talk) 17:51, 15 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Merge tags removed, this article needs renaming to Mount Blanshard. See User_talk:Skookum1#Merging_Golden_Ears_.28mountain.29_with_Golden_Ears_Group.Skookum1 (talk) 05:44, 17 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
There do not appear to be any objections (given this discussion and the fact that it's been posted at WP:CANBOARD for the better part of a year), so (if required) the request for an admin to undertake the move should be made at WP:RM under "uncontroversial requests". --Skeezix1000 (talk) 15:54, 6 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Name origin[edit]

This bothered me on first sight:

Historically there has been confusion regarding the name of the area. Originally, the massif was referred to as The Golden Eyries[1][2], which became corrupted to Golden Ears
  1. ^ Fairley-86
  2. ^ Ricker-CAJ83

Fairley and Ricker aren't online but I question the validity of their sources, as this is clearly wrong to me; "Golden Aeyries" was a later emendation that the Geographical Survey dismissed; see "Golden Ears (peaks)". BC Geographical Names. and "Blanshard, Mount". BC Geographical Names.....the "ears", also, were meant to refer to donkey or mule ears; the earliest print reference on BCGNIS is to Lieut Richard Mayne, who cited it as an already known name; I don't know of any earlier reference to "Golden Aeries/Eyries/Aeries"....Fairley and Ricker are not reliable sources for historical information.Skookum1 (talk) 18:06, 15 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
