Geese and barnacles: Sincere belief, or wink-and-nod loophole?[edit]

« In the days before it was realised that birds migrate, it was thought that barnacle geese, Branta leucopsis, developed from this crustacean, since they were never seen to nest in temperate Europe [...] Since barnacle geese were thought to be "neither flesh, nor born of flesh", they were allowed to be eaten on days when eating meat was forbidden by Christianity,[2] though it was not universally accepted. » Did they actually not know that birds migrated (seems dubious) and believed that geese came from barnacles, or did they just use this as a plausibly deniable excuse to eat meat on fast-days? -- Phyzome (talk) 17:03, 25 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]
