Fascinating history

[edit]

I was speaking to a guy who was educated here about forty years ago - he received all his education in Gormanston College via the medium of Irish - and he told me that Gormanston was established specifically to counter the anglocentric Catholic culture of the other private secondary schools, which this article also basically says. He went further: apparently, John Charles McQuaid refused to allow the founders to build it within the archdiocese of Dublin and this is why the school is in the diocese of Meath. If somebody could extend this history section that would be really appreciated. In the meantime, I placed a request for citations as I'd like to read more on the background to its establishment - and Gormanston College has very little (http://www.gormanstoncollege.ie/Franciscan_Community.html). I am also going to add some referenced info I have found online. 194.125.110.212 (talk) 20:02, 26 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Father Ronald Bennett OFM

[edit]

There seems to be a concerted effort by a number of people to exclude reference to the sex scandal involving sexual abuse of pupils by Father Bennett. This sad episode is, however, an important, if regrettable, aspect of the history of the college. Any attempt to remove it is, in my opinion, plain censorship. - Mia-etol (talk) 10:52, 20 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Following up on this - this story about the official apology is relevant: http://www.independent.ie/regionals/droghedaindependent/news/franciscans-issue-apology-for-abuse-at-gormanston-30698429.html Mia-etol (talk) 10:35, 9 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]
