Classification

[edit]

Should he really be classified as a demon? If my memory serves me right, all of the balrogs, including Gothmog, were originally Maiar corrupted by Melkor. -69.29.163.55

Tolkien frequently referred to the balrogs as 'demons' and translated the term as 'demons of might' ('rog' = 'demon'). Indeed, in letters Tolkien directly stated correspondences for Eru > God, Melkor > Satan, Ainur > angels, and Balrogs > demons. --CBD 17:40, 12 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

p.s. Very clear, very good article. Shame about what happens to the more popular Tolkien stuff.

Movie Version of Gothmod

[edit]

What is the difference between the book portrayal of Gothmog and his role in the RotK movie? It appears as though he is a standard (albeit hideously deformed) orc with human-like intelligence. On various sites he is listed as lieutenant of Minas Morgul and second-in-command to the Witch-King. Should such a major difference be highlighted in the article?Robotempire 07:30, 2 July 2007 (UTC) you're thinking of the wrong gothmog rofur aug-11 8:10 mount[reply]
