Public journal by country[edit]

Added:

As for the Egyptian official journal, it's not actually Al-Waqa'i'a al-Masriya, which is apparently an annexed newspaper, but al-Jaridah ar-Rismiyah al-Misriyah (الجريدة الرسمية المصرية). --Filius Rosadis (talk) 19:44, 27 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Public journalGovernment gazette – The term "public journal" appears to be something that we thought up in preference to "gazette". I can't find any use of public journal in a Google and Google Scholar search. There is a reference in the article but a search in Google books does not appear to show the term in use in the cited source. "Gazette" on the other hand is in wide use in existing articles, our categories, Wikisource and numerous titles of official government publications around the world. The article should be renamed in accordance with COMMONNAME. Philafrenzy (talk) 00:43, 14 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Misnomer[edit]

Currently, the title of this article has almost no relationship to its contents. Furthermore, the current opening definition is unsupported by any citation and is incorrect. In order to see what constitute government gazettes go to List of government gazettes.

Here is the relevant definition from the OED:

2. a. spec. One of the three official journals entitled The London Gazette, The Edinburgh Gazette, and The Dublin Gazette, issued by authority twice a week, and containing lists of government appointments and promotions, names of bankrupts, and other public notices. Hence sometimes used gen. for the official journal of any government. to be in the gazette : to be published a bankrupt.

The first official journal published in England was The Oxford Gazette, the first number of which appeared in Nov. 1665, when the Court was at Oxford on account of the plague. Nos. 22 and 23 were printed in London, and with No. 24 the title was changed to The London Gazette. The Edinburgh Gazette was first issued in 1690, The Dublin Gazette in 1705.

b. A report in an official gazette.

Merriam-Webster disagrees. If the major UK dictionaries are in agreement, we can always mark the page as non-British English, like Canadian English or American English. Int21h (talk) 19:31, 24 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]
