Dasmarinas versus das Marinas[edit]

It is very unlikely that Luis Pérez das Mariñas is the correct spelling of his name (as opposed to Luis Pérez Dasmariñas). The external link spells his surname without the space, and a Google search turns up about eight times as many hits that way than with the space. (And those with the space are mostly Wikipedia mirrors.) Also, there is a municipality in the Philippines named for him, and spelled without the space. Dos Mariñas would be more believable, but das is not a Spanish word, nor (as far as I know) a particle used in Spanish names.

The same arguments would apply to Gómez Pérez Dasmariñas.

Disputed/Dubious: Weseley Merritt as Military Governor of the Philippines[edit]

This discussion impacts this article, the Wesley Merritt article, the Elwell Otis article and, almost certainly, other articles as well.

This article lists Wesley Merritt as the first Governor General of the Philippines. The Wesley Merritt article states, "[ Manila ] fell on August 13 and Merritt became the military governor of the Philippines." The Elwell Stephen Otis article says, "When he arrived, he assumed command of the VIII Corps, replacing Merritt who had become the military governor [...] ." I challenge the unsupported assertion that Merritt held the post of Governor General of the Philippines, and/or that he held the post of Military Governor of the Philippines, and I question the numbering in Wikipedia articles of the Governors General of the Philippines.

This article has Merritt serving as Governor General of the Philippines from August 14, 1898 to August 28, 1898. As of August 28, 1898, the Philippines was still under Spanish sovereignty, there was no American government in the Philippines, and the post of Military Governor, AFAICT, did not exist at that time. Even though a "Protocol of agreement between the United States and Spain, embodying the terms of a basis for the establishment of peace between the two countries" had been signed at Washington Aug. 12, 1898 (Halstead 1898, pp. 176-178). Deady 2005, p. 59 says, "As commanders, Otis and MacArthur headed both the army and the Office of the Military Governor.", not mentioning Merritt. McFerson 2002, p. 243 says, "... August 22: Merritt is replaced by Elwell S. Otis, who became the first Military Governor of the Philippines."

Merge discussion[edit]

This article was recently split, forking off the List of American Governor-Generals of the Philippines article. I haven't seen any discussion aimed at building consensus for the split. I vote for one whole list with both the Spanish and American Governor-Generals in one article. Why split it? It was quicker with just one list. There should have been a discussion and a consensus before doing such big change. Please Bill, I think you should merge them and erase the extra list. Thanks. Yours is the only comment since I proposed the merge over a month ago. Per Wikipedia:Silence and consensus, consensus exists for the articles to be re-merged. I've re-merged the articles. There were no article-space links to the (now deleted) List of American Governors-General of the Philippines article, so I haven't left a redirect there.

Fixing 1898-1946[edit]

The 1898-1946 subsection shows as legends Japanese instead of Spanish, Japanese (Naval) instead of American (Military), and yellow for Japanese instead of black. I am correcting it now.

Also, if I may offer a suggestion: make sure to see if the timelines' legends were correct, please and thank you.
