2010 eruption[edit]

VEI-6??[edit]

According to the article, Grímsvötn is a VEI-6 system, but other articles list it as low as 1-3 - see [3] or google Rkarlsba (talk) 15:54, 22 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Note that effusive eruptions are not explosive eruptions I'd suggest the 1783-1785 eruption gets a section in this article with the main being pointed at Laki - that eruption looks to have been in 1783-1785 accorting to Timetable_of_major_worldwide_volcanic_eruptions and here the '1783-1785 Laki fissure eruption: the largest historically known effusive eruption), '^[1] the Laki article describes some pretty major effects from this volcano. Particularly this line The Laki eruption and its aftermath has been estimated to have killed over six million people^[2] globally, making it the deadliest volcanic eruption in historical times.

VEI-6 looks to be in the same sort of scale as Krakatoa - so pretty large and explosive. The last big explosive eruption of the volcano is dated as 8230 BCE ± 50 in this article Volcanic_Explosivity_Index when it had a large explosive eruption, compared to the 1783-85 effusive eruption. The older eruption in 8230 BCE is presumably what generated the caldera ? or does anyone know if the caldera only formed as a result of the 1783-85 effusive eruption? The volcano has a 6x8 km large caldera, whose southern rim is exposed ^[3]

Incidentally a bbc report predicts this eruption will be small and not disrupt air travel much ^[4] EdwardLane (talk) 10:58, 23 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

A new article will be needed quite soon, 2011 eruptions of Grímsvötn, anyone want to start a page? In the meantime I will undertake a rapid edit, with relavant scientific links.

I copy-pasted and slightly edited in content from All-geo.org but it was deleted (apparently copy-pasting relevant information is not allowed). Especially with the high amount of hits, I still do think though that some sort of comparative analysis between the effects of Eyjafjallajökull and Grímsvötn eruptions (in layman terms!) would be appropriate, at least while the events are unfolding. --NikoN (talk) 08:05, 23 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Let's wait a bit with a new article. When it get too big here, there is enought time to move it. Until that, you could make a redirect to this section to make sure the info lands on the right place. As for temp protection: I see no need yet. There is not much vandalism and it is especially the link between experts and non-experts which makes this encyclopedia a good gneral plublic one! Yes, vandalism seems to have ceased. Sorry, NikoN we must avoid text that is copyright, as Wikipedia is very keen on having unique material. One of my edits comparing with the Eyjafjallajökull eruption was also deleted, maybe it can be added later.--Lidos (talk) 19:57, 23 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

glacial floods as subsection in eruption section?[edit]

Yesterday I have been bold and placed the glacial flood section in the eruption section. My guess is that the event is not notable for mentioning in the article (as it occurs more often?), except as an indicator of the 2011 eruptions; and I therefore feel it is more suitalbe to place it in a subsection. 2020 earthquakes[edit]
