I’d like to have a line added to update this article about Greg Wyler. As an employee of E-Space (one of his companies), I have a conflict of interest and can’t update the article directly. At the end of the Business Ventures section, can you please add the following sentence:

Wyler founded satellite communications company E-Space in 2022 to create a network of inexpensive, small satellites providing services to governments and businesses.[1][2] [3]

History with Google and SpaceX[edit]

In speaking with someone this week about LEOs and Internet access, they pointed out that this article about Greg Wyler does not mention that he worked at Google on Internet access and then left in 2014 to go to SpaceX. A couple of links confirmed this:

Hello, Wikipedians: I am an employee of one of Greg Wyler’s companies and therefore have a conflict of interest. I’d like to offer some suggestions for this page, mainly to do with replacing missing citations and improving the overall structure. Your time and insight are appreciated.

1. What I think should be changed

Please replace the first sentence of the Lead paragraph:

Gregory Thane Wyler (born 12 November 1969)[not verified in body] is an American tech entrepreneur, engineer, and inventor.

Please replace with:

Greg Wyler is an American tech entrepreneur, engineer, and inventor.

Reason for the change:

The existing sentence notes a citation is needed to verify Wyler’s full name and birthdate. I cannot find sources for that information so have removed it in my suggested version.

2. What I think should be changed

Please add an Early life and education section after the Lead:

The proposed section would look like this:

Early life and education

Greg Wyler was born and raised near Boston, Massachusetts.[1] [2] Wyler studied finance and computer science in college; first at Xavier University in Cincinnati, Ohio, and then at North Adams State College in western Massachusetts. After college, Wyler attended Chicago-Kent College of Law,[1] and graduated in 1996.[3]

Reason for the change:

An Early life and education section is a common feature of Wikipedia biographies and I’ve formatted my suggestion following the example of the Good Articles about Shaygan Kheradpir and Buddy Fletcher. The suggestion contains relevant information about Wyler’s background sourced from prominent publications.

3. What I think should be changed

Please replace the first sentence in the second paragraph of the Business ventures section:

In 2007, he founded O3b Networks, Ltd.[4] and the founder of O3b Networks

Please replace with:

In 2007, he founded O3b Networks, Ltd.,[4] a satellite company that helped businesses provide internet service to emerging markets.[5]

Reason for the change:

The existing sentence doesn’t offer any description of what the company did, and no description appears elsewhere in the body of the article. The version I’ve suggested adds important clarifying details about the company based on a high-quality source.

4. What I think should be changed

Please replace the second sentence in the second paragraph of the Business ventures section:

The idea[clarification needed] was first conceived in 2005 while working on a project to provide a nationwide telephone service in rural Rwanda, attempting to wire the post-war and economically shattered country.[6]

Please replace with:

Wyler became interested in connecting under-served parts of the world to the internet after meeting the Rwandan president’s chief of staff[7] in 2002;[1] an encounter that led to a project to provide internet service in rural Rwanda that began in 2003.[8]

Reason for the change:

The existing sentence is unclear as to how the idea for the company was conceived and there is nothing in the source that offers clarification. The existing sentence also contains inaccurate information as the source clearly states Wyler’s work in Rwanda was focused on internet service, not telephone. The replacement I’ve suggested uses an additional high-quality source to clarify and correct the information presented in the original sentence.

5. What I think should be changed

Please replace the third sentence in the second paragraph of the Business ventures section:

O3b has launched 12 satellites, and the system provides the highest capacity and lowest latency combination of any satellites built to date.[10][non-primary source needed]

Please replace with:

As of January 2015, O3b had launched 12 satellites and had 35 customers, including the nations of Democratic Republic of Congo, Malaysia, and Afghanistan.[1]

Reason for the change:

The existing sentence is sourced from the company’s own press release and contains promotional language like “…the system provides the highest capacity and lowest latency combination of any satellites built to date.” The replacement I’ve suggested is sourced from a prominent publication and removes promotional language.

6. What I think should be changed

Please replace the third paragraph of the Business ventures section:

In 2012,[11] Wyler founded OneWeb with the mission of "enabling Internet access for everyone".[12]

Please replace with:

In 2012,[13] Wyler founded OneWeb to provide international internet and mobile services via satellite.[12]

Reason for the change:

The version I’ve suggested replaces a press release with reporting from a high quality source. It also replaces a quote from the company with wording that reflects the information reported in the source.

7. What I think should be changed

Please move the third paragraph of the Business ventures section into the second paragraph of the Business ventures section, placing it in front of the last sentence (the one beginning with “As of 2012, O3b had launched…”)

Moving the third paragraph into the second paragraph would result in the second paragraph looking like this:

In 2012,[13] Wyler founded OneWeb to provide international internet and mobile services via satellite.[12] As of January 2015, O3b had launched 12 satellites and had 35 customers, including cruise lines and offshore oil rigs, as well as nations including Democratic Republic of the Congo and Afghanistan.[1]

Reason for the change:

As written, the section is out of chronological order. The version I’m suggesting orders the sentences chronologically.

8. What I think should be changed

Please replace the sixth paragraph of the Business ventures section:

Wyler founded satellite communications company E-Space in 2022, to create a network of satellites providing services targeting governments and businesses.[14][15] [16]

Please replace with:

Wyler founded satellite communications company E-Space in 2022, to create a network of satellites providing services targeting governments and businesses.[14][15] [16]

Reason for the change:

The version I’m suggesting simply provides a link to the Wikipedia article for the company described in the sentence.

9. What I think should be changed Please change the name of the Business ventures section to be called Career

Career

Reason for the change

Changing the current Business ventures section to the title of Career section mirrors the structure of Good Articles for business people including Bob Muglia, Shaygan Kheradpir, and Buddy Fletcher.
