[edit]

An Irish source is now quoted for the recently added lead statement "The town was evacuated again in February 2024 when the Sundhnúkagígaröðin volcano erupted again for the third time since December." However all Icelandic sources I have seen use the word evacuated in a different sense as the civil population has not been allowed to return to occupy the town since the original evacuation last year. Can we reach a consensus that this misleading statement should be deleted or modified. ? ChaseKiwi (talk) 17:14, 10 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I think the edit is just wrong - the source says that the town had previously been evacuated, not that it was evacuated again. It does say however that the Blue Lagoon was evacuated. Just a case of tweaking the text in the article to follow what the source actually says. thanks Geopersona (talk) 17:30, 10 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
We could modify to state that the volcano has erupted a third time and residents have not been allowed to return to the town as of 2/8/24. Cornsimpel (talk) 20:07, 10 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
My view on such matters is that the original author of the edit is allowed to correct to be consistent with source without waiting the usual period for further debate. I would also have no objection if this opportunity was taken to address the issue that made me visit the page. I have been trying to help clarify on other pages that in English we have a mix of correct terms for the volcano of the moment with usually Sundhnúkur crater chain being used, I suspect correctly, the most. This means I understand essentially the same as the Icelandic Sundhnúkagígaröðin compound descriptor even if it has extra shades. I would suggest that in article first use of Sundhnúkagígaröðin is substituted by wording Sundhnúkur crater chain (Sundhnúkagígaröðin) as many English speakers have problems with names of this length.  Done I changed it to Sundhnúkur which our article identifies as the location of the eruption and added the link for the article about the eruptions to the second use Cornsimpel (talk) 11:07, 11 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
