Usage[edit]

What's its usage/purpose? `'Míkka 00:35, 28 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

  • I'm not a specialist in differential geometry, but it seems to me that one use for the Gromov product is simply to define δ-hyperbolic spaces in the sense of Gromov. There's also the intuitive idea that geodesics starting at the same point and heading off to two different points tend to stay "close" for about one Gromov product's length. Both these points are mentioned in the article. Sullivan.t.j 18:31, 28 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
    • "Both these points" do not answer my question. The first one is simply because there is no article about "spaces in the sense of Gromov". The second one is a property, not use/purpose/application. Please keep in mind that my question is not of idle curiosity: by answering my question in the article, the cohesiveness of wikipedia will be improved. Right now this article stands kinda isolated. `'Míkka 19:03, 28 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
      • I appreciate your points and understand your motivation, Mikka. For the first point, though, I should point out that Gromov hyperbolicity is dealt with in the article on δ-hyperbolic spaces (with a redirect from "Gromov hyperbolic space"). As a more general point, I find that it sometimes takes a little time for the "cohesiveness" of which you write to appear: over time, as other articles are written, links to this article and additional information for it will appear. That's no reason for us not to help it on its way, of course — just a reason to be patient. :-) If you'd feel more comfortable classing this article as a geometry-stub, I would have no problem with that.
