Hey, the Eclipse 500 page has the following line:

3. Extended rudder and elevator, to eliminate gurney flaps

There's nothing on either page to suggest why you'd want to (i.e. Disadvantages).

Easy answer: drag. AKRadeckiSpeaketh 02:08, 3 October 2007 (UTC)

Mid-chord?

If the tab is mounted mid-chord, rather than on the trailing edge, is it still technically a gurney flap? The Bell 204 has this configuration. AKRadeckiSpeaketh 02:10, 3 October 2007 (UTC)

I am the author of the reference given in the figure at the top right of the article on Gurney flaps. It is a picture of the Newman airfoil with a Gurney flap attached. The reference given there is NASA Technical Memorandum 4071. To give credit where credit is due, the actual reference from where this figure came is: Liebeck, Robert H.: Design of Subsonic Airfoils for High Lift. Journal of Aircraft, vol. 15, no. 9, Sept. 1978, pp. 547-561.

Please make this change so that Dr. Liebeck gets the appropriate credit. Thanks. Neuhart3 (talk) 00:31, 6 April 2015 (UTC)Dan Neuhart,4/5/2015.

Hello Mr Neuhart. Thank you for stepping up. You are correct. The file was uploaded at Wikimedia Commons by mistake (under the assumption that it was in the public domain) when in fact it is quoted "with permission" from a fully-copyrighted paper, as indicated in the figure description in the source document. Nevertheless, I believe that this drawing is simple enough that no copyright can really be claimed over it. I have edited the file description to provide source and fix the licensing terms.
