Collaboration

This site is the July Collaboration of the Month for WikiProject South Korean counties and cities. Let's make this article shine! -- Visviva 28 June 2005 03:45 (UTC)

Questions and ideas for improvement: references for UNESCO; highlight the role of the city in the history section; geography: any major floods?, what kind of agriculture?, who is the mayor (name)? name the administrative units (table), have there been changes in the economic situation recently, references to the numbers?, culture section needs expansion that treats the importance of the UNESCO sites, where are the sites located, major museums, local food (specialities), contemporary culture, recent expos…? I'm just trying to provide some ideas how the article could be improved. Kokiri 28 June 2005 22:34 (UTC)

UNESCO Top Ten?

I can't find any reference for the "top ten cities" designation. It's quite popular on the internet, with various cites giving 1979 or 2000 as the year of the designation; however, looking through official UNESCO documents for those years, I don't see anything of this nature. Anyone have an idea where this came from? -- Visviva 3 July 2005 16:41 (UTC)

In my guidbook it says that Gyeongju was put on the list in the 1979 meeting in Thailand. Peregrine981 July 4, 2005 22:29 (UTC)

Here are a few web references, but none refers to a press release or a UNESCO document:

However, I severely doubt that an organization like the UNESCO would claim any order of sites (thus no top ten). The UNESCO List doesn't include any such reference. I think the claim should be removed, since unverified. Kokiri 5 July 2005 13:18 (UTC)

Also the 1979 World Heritage Committee meeting was not in Thailand, but in Egypt. (Gyeongju/Kyongju was not discussed). [1] The only Thailand meeting took place in 1994 in Phuket (Gyeongju/Kyongju was not discussed). Gyeongju/Kyongju was discussed in 2000, but only in relation to the inclusion of "Gyeongju Historic Areas" on the WHL.
The proverbial "grain of truth" here is that Kyongju probably is among the top 10 municipalities in terms of the number of World Heritage sites there (2 or 3, depending how you count). But that doesn't mean UNESCO "declared Gyeongju among the top ten," exactly. Oh well, another bit of disinformation bites the dust. -- Visviva 5 July 2005 13:39 (UTC)
I support the removal of this information, although we should certainly keep an eye outfor what's happened as far as UNESCO is concerned. There must be some reason the list is cited so often, and not just on the internet. Peregrine981 July 6, 2005 12:11 (UTC)
I think the reason is called World Heritage, and we've got that in. Good day! Kokiri 7 July 2005 08:42 (UTC)

Map -- Help!

Please, someone save me from my total lack of graphic-design skills, and upload a decent version of Image:Gyeongjudivs.png. -- Visviva 3 July 2005 16:43 (UTC)

It seems like a good map to me. I have no real graphics tools, but I personally have no problem with it. Keep up the good work. Peregrine981 July 4, 2005 22:29 (UTC)

I'm not quite sure what you didn't like. I've redrawn the map, but feel free to revert. Kokiri 5 July 2005 14:07 (UTC)

I've redrawn the logo, so it looks a bit crispier. I'm not sure if there's enough of an artistic element in the new version to change the licence, though. Kokiri 6 July 2005 08:47 (UTC)

Romanizations

Can somebody check that all the romanizations are correct. I don't suspect any mistakes; just to make the article shine. Kokiri 6 July 2005 09:04 (UTC)

Cake

I seem to recall that Gyeongju merchants are all happy to sell a "special cake" to unsuspecting tourists. Is this cake actually a local specialty? Peregrine981 12:27, July 15, 2005 (UTC)

You might be thinking of 'Gyeongju Bread', which is a small cake-like roll with red bean paste filling. It is a local specialty, which the Gyeongju area is known for. I dunno about other 'special cakes', though. -Zonath 05:06, July 23, 2005 (UTC)

See Gyeongju bread. -- Visviva 05:30, 23 July 2005 (UTC)

My changes

Some changes I've made:

  1. I've reduced the subheadings. A single subheading is not required. It spoils the ToC. I've promoted some lower level subheadings to top level headings.
  2. I've reduced the table width so that the image does not overlap in 800x600 resolution.
  3. I've used the main template
  4. Please use   between a unit and its number: eg 40 °C, it renders as 40 °C; 32 mm --> 32 mm. It is part of the Manual of style.
  5. Page needs a copyedit. =Nichalp «Talk»= 15:25, August 4, 2005 (UTC)

Nice Article

Dear, Wikipedia manager

Dear, Wikipedia manager

I found some mistakes in contents.

Firstly, if we describe a sentence repeatedly, without any explanation, the sentence could not use two kinds of proper nouns describing the same thing in contents. Moreover even we use the words alternately, it is nonsense. In the Article page referring to Gyeongju, the contents describe that the city lies --- on the coast of the East Sea. In the Today's featured article, however, those show that Gyeongju lies --- on the coast of the Sea of Japan.

Secondly, Gyeongju lies in the far southeastern corner of North Gyeongsang Province, on the coast of the East Sea, not on the coast of the Sea of Japan. This is becoming clear through many kinds of historical facts such as maps and books.

I would like to request the corroboration.

Keeping Smackbot, editors and readers all happy ... hopefully ...

Store published ISBN to Deok-muk Kim's book here for safe keeping: 89-953630-3-4. This is the number published on the book, yet one that fails the inherent check-digit process described at ISBN. Thanks for your help with this one, Visviva. :-) --Keesiewonder 13:18, 15 January 2007 (UTC)

User:Visviva corrected the ISBN on 15 January to ISBN 89-953630-3-7, which is valid. (Check digit is different). Not sure how he found it, but since he speaks Korean, that must have helped! EdJohnston 22:17, 23 January 2007 (UTC)

Here's a reference from the article that must be missing a URL

  • Kang, Bong W. (2002). A study of success and failure in the water management of the Buk Chun in Kyongju, Korea. Paper delivered at the Eighteenth Congress of the International Commission on Irrigation and Drainage. (Electronic Version).

What is 'Electronic Version' referring to? I think this reference must have had a URL at one time, but it got lost. EdJohnston 22:10, 23 January 2007 (UTC)

I'll keep looking, but the first thing I've found looks like an old cached version of the WP article. It mentions www.iranrivers.com, a site that appears to currently be for sale. Also, ICID certainly has a site, but it appears that their journal articles are not free. Of course, papers presented at conferences are not necessarily published in the journal either ... Working progress

I'm working on updating the article, but if the update looks temporarily ceased or slow in this week, that is just because I'm working on creating/editing Gyeongju-related articles and trying to obtain permissions on useful Gyeongju images from Flickrs for not only those articles, but also the article that faces FARC. That creation is to reduce "red links" on the article. Photographers also want to see their images actually placed on pertinent articles are below. so well here I am.--Caspian blue 01:07, 13 August 2009 (UTC)

Heathcare & utilities and Sport sections are added. However, I know these sections should have more information and grammatical cleanups.. Articles of all subdivisions of Gyeongju were also created as were pertinent maps in the last week. Images obtained from Flickr users are pending for the final confirmations.--Caspian blue 21:17, 24 August 2009 (UTC)

I've created some articles to remove red links from this article, but well still have to do a lot of works.--Caspian blue 14:42, 4 September 2009 (UTC)

Layout

I'm noticing a couple odd bits of layout issues. In IE8, I'm getting massive white space as can be seen here [2], and in firefox, I'm getting a little text/image overlap you can see above the green line[3]. Someone who knows more about where everything is supposed to be exactly might want to check that and also check the article at various resolutions, etc.--Crossmr (talk) 08:26, 1 September 2009 (UTC)

Thank you for taking the effort and the time to inform the problem. That's odd. The first example (IE) is like using a {{clear}} template which is not used on the page. The second one is also odd, because I'm using Firefox and never run into the problem. May I ask you what resolution you were setting when capturing the screen?--Caspian blue 11:12, 1 September 2009 (UTC)
I am running at 1920x1200. I tried resizing and it fixed it at various sizes. I'm going to guess this problem relates to the images and their placement in the text in relation to the resolution. You might try resizing the browser while moving the images around to see how they fit in various sizes.--Crossmr (talk) 12:10, 1 September 2009 (UTC)
You must be using a big screen. My computer does not support for that resolution, so don't know how the article looks in such big size. However, I tested various sizes under 10241280 width and 800 height, but could not find such problems.--Caspian blue 23:09, 2 September 2009 (UTC)
Not too big, a 17 inch laptop display. but if I use less than 1920x1200 everything looks fuzzy. Perhaps another editor who is really familiar with where everything should be who can run at a higher resolution can check the images and spacing and make sure its sitting okay at various sizes.--Crossmr (talk) 05:27, 3 September 2009 (UTC)
I thought your monitor is a 19 or 21 inch width. Well, since the monitor size is also common one, the problem is worrying, however, I don't know what to do. As the matter is a technical one, I might try to post to Village Pump. Thanks.--Caspian blue 19:19, 3 September 2009 (UTC)
Your concern is indeed legitimate. I checked the layout at 1440x900 resolution on 19 inch monitor which shows the same problem. I think the problem comes from a conflict between the long settlement infobox and the second image at the history section. Unless I add additional contents with a 6 or 7 line length, it would be better to remove the image. So the problem would be fixed. Thank for you for bring up the issue here.--Caspian blue 00:44, 4 September 2009 (UTC)

Subsidiary organ

What exactly is meant by the "subsidiary organ" in the government section? What's the original Korean? I think we can find a more natural translation for this part of the city government. --Amble (talk) 06:50, 4 September 2009 (UTC)

The original writer, Visviva (talk · contribs) wrote "two subsidiary organs" in 2005, and I have assumed it referring to "직속기관" (Jiksok gigwan, literally, organ directly belonging to (some government/organization)) that currently has 4 divisions. The Gyeongju city government has updated their administrative organization, so "two subsidiary organs" is no longer correct regardless of the name. Anyway, I don't know how to translate 직속기관 into English.--Caspian blue 14:26, 4 September 2009 (UTC)
Yes, that must be the original Korean source for this phrase. "Subsidiary organ" is a correct translation, but now I'm not sure it's really the title of the body - it sounds like a classification instead of a specific government body. For example, on p. 5 and 6 here [4]. Also in the link here [5] there seem to be several such bodies: "직속기관 : 1소 1센터 4과 20담당". The "1소" might be for example the fire department. --Amble (talk) 01:20, 5 September 2009 (UTC)
I agree that "직속기관" would be just named as such for convenient classification. However, I don't think the firefighter station is the "subsidiary organ" if you look at the graphic chart on the city page. The fire station seems like to be in "Disaster Safety Management Division". (재난안전관리과), one of 7 subdivisions in Construction and City Division. At first I was confused to as to why the 직속기관 is not divided into "two" just like the chart illustration. The organ is obviously divided into two classification with two titles; 보건소 (Heath Care Center) and 농업기술센터 (Agriculture Technology Center) each of which has two subdivisions. I think the government does not correctly state their classification. Moreover, if you look at ○ 본청 : 4국 1단 29과 125담당, you will notice that I don't separate 국 and 단. So I've written "five departments" not "four departments and one additional department.

So I'm not really sure how you want me to describe the "직속기관".--Caspian blue 01:46, 5 September 2009 (UTC)
I'm confused. It could be my rudimentary Korean, but it sounds to me like "직속기관 : 1소 1센터 4과 20담당" is giving a list of subsidiary organs, of which 1 is a "소", one is a "센터", four are "과", and there are 20 "담당". Where does it say that there is only one "직속기관"? --Amble (talk) 05:30, 5 September 2009 (UTC)
I think you're correct since I have not differentiated "국" and "단" in 5 divisions of the main body of the government. In "직속기관 : 1소 1센터 4과 20담당", "소" refers to "보건소" (Heath Care Center) and "센터" indicates "농업기술센터" (Agriculture Technology Center). So "two subsidiary organs" would be correct. However, what I find amusing is that 보건소 is also commonly called "보건센터" while 농업기술센터 is more commonly referred to as "농업기술소". The English translation of them are with the word, Center. I will fix the description on them accordingly. Thank you for the input and would you continue proofreading and fixing my grammatical errors in other sections? --Caspian blue 12:39, 5 September 2009 (UTC)

Hi Caspian Blue, That wasn't a grammatical error on your part, just an unclear point left over from an earlier version of the article. In general, the English is not bad at all, and the article is looking good. I will keep proofreading when I have time. --Amble (talk) 20:01, 5 September 2009 (UTC)
