HD 84810L Carinae – As seen in a SIMBAD search, the Bayer designation "l Carinae" is used more often to refer to this star than the HD designation "HD 84810". The same thing is seen in Google Scholar results for both searches. Note that the star "L Carinae" is pretty much never referred to by its Bayer designation, so a simple hatnote atop the new title of this page would suffice to solve that problem. Relisted. Survey[edit]

Feel free to state your position on the renaming proposal by beginning a new line in this section with *'''Support''' or *'''Oppose''', then sign your comment with ~~~~. Since polling is not a substitute for discussion, please explain your reasons, taking into account Wikipedia's policy on article titles.
  • Oppose IIRC either at WT:AST or WT:ASTRO it was determined that Latin-letter Bayer designations should be avoided due to the confusion introduced through them with the lower and upper case forms which on Wikipedia cannot be separated (unlike Wiktionary, Wikipedia does not allow separate lower case and upper case initial letters) "L Carinae" should become a set index page, like how many other Latin Letter Bayer designations are. "l" has additional problems looking like "I" and Ι . As we have a frequently used alternate designation without these problems, we can avoid those problems. -- 65.94.171.126 (talk) 05:28, 17 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
    • However, WP's global policy WP:COMMONNAME trumps our local guideline of WP:NCASTRO. Therefore, per the WP:COMMONNAME policy that article should be at their most common names, this article should be moved to "l Carinae", as it is in more common use than "HD 84810". The issue of there being a star named "L Carinae" can be solved with a hatnote, as that star is not commonly referred to as "L Carinae", as can the misreadings of stuff like "I Carinae" and "Iota Carinae" as "l Carinae". • Support target name much more accessible than the HD designation. Cas Liber (talk · contribs) 05:05, 20 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Discussion[edit]

Any additional comments:
That move was not conditional on this move being completed, and should have been no matter if this goes through or not. I think that the move is uncontroversial enough that it didn't need to go through WP:RM, but if you have a problem with it, then I can move it back and start an official RM if you want. It's the replacement of one topic by another at the same pagename, so would be an implicit multimove. I don't oppose the displacement of "HD 90264" since my personal preference is making a set index at "L Carinae" -- 65.94.171.126 (talk) 04:43, 18 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
