Battle of the April storm

[edit]

No mention of "Battle of the April Storm"? This is Larry Forrester's fictionalized account of Glowworm's encounter with the Admiral Hipper. The characters are made up (mostly with different names), but the sequence of events seems to match pretty well with the description here on Wikipedia.

I was going to ask the same question! The book is mentioned in Roope's Wiki page. It was a great story of redemption for this thirteen-year-old!! https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gerard_Broadmead_Roope — Preceding unsigned comment added by Mofo80503 (talkcontribs) 18:38, 5 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Looks interesting, should be able to complete a full review in next few days. Cheers, Ian Rose (talk) 11:08, 5 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Technical review

  • No dab links.
  • Not sure what value is added by the uboat.net external link.
    • Legacy, but gone now.

Prose

  • ...she encountered the German destroyers Z11 Bernd von Arnim and then Z18 Hans Lüdemann in the heavy fog before 08:00 a.m. -- Grammatically it looks a bit odd to have "then" where you do, given you have the descripter "German destroyers" embracing both. I assume you mean that Glowworm found one before the other but if the time difference between the two encounters wasn't too large I think you could easily lose this word -- doesn't seem vital.
    • It was in sequence, albeit fairly close, so I'm happy to lose the word.

Structure

  • Always prefer to see at least two subheaders under a section heading though I realise it's not simple with a mix of pre-war and early wartime stuff prior to the final battle. What if Career became Operational history and you gave the first part of the section an Early career subheader?
    • Works for me.

Coverage/Referencing

  • No issues.

Supporting materials

  • All images appropriately licensed and captioned.
  • Although not required, alt text might be worth adding.

Summary

Concerns

[edit]

I'm deeply puzzled that there are so few sources for the account of the final action; particularly so as the article is significantly at odds with other accounts to be found elsewhere. Roope's VC citation clearly states that he deliberately rammed the Hipper and crew member Duncan Blair states that the captain gave the order 'prepare to ram'. There are numerous other such accounts and at least one photograph exists showing the very serious extent of damage to the Hipper's starboard side which does suggest she was rammed. Given that fact, and supposing that the longstanding story has been somehow shown to be incorrect, surely at least some reference should be made to the differing accounts?
