Shouldn't this article be called HMS Nautilus (1914)?. It isn't really a class as there's only one boat, and it was launched in 1914. Normally that is the date in the title. I have also set up a redir from HMS N1. Welsh 21:29, 4 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, we dab by date of launch rather than date of commissioning. I moved the page to reflect that, but now I'm also unsure about the 'never became combat operational so she was never given the HMS prefix'. Commissioned warships receive the HMS prefix, whether or not they are intended to be combat operational. And since this is really an article about an individual submarine and not a class per se, our conventions would be to move it to HMS Nautilus (1914). But unfortunately there's already a redirect with history there. I'll see about alerting an admin to clear the way for a move. Benea (talk) 15:11, 12 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Saddle tanks[edit]

What does this mean?

The resulting design changed from the saddle tanks common at the time to a double hull.

At this early date, ballast tanks were placed within the pressure hull. Saddle tanks were a new innovation at this time. So this submarine is either 40 years ahead of the curve, or this sentence needs some work – quite possibly it was adopting saddle tanks that was the innovation?
