Merging, Reformatting, Clean up!
[edit]Greeting Wikipedians! If you head on over to the Knitting page, there is a lot of information there...but that's just why I'm reaching out. There are currently two pages for knitting with a lot of crossover information. This needs to be completely restructured, merged, and cleaned up. I need help with this as I'm brand new to editing on Wikipedia but I'm a really fast learner.
We need to start with one article on knitting. The fundamentals and history only. Everything else can be cross-linked once that's cleaned up. From there, Hand Knitting and Machine Knitting can be the child articles with specific techniques linked as neccessary. We also need to connect Finger Knitting and Arm Knitting. This is only a loose outline but a start.
Thoughts? --Kobuu (talk) 19:27, 5 August 2014 (UTC)
I agree the content needs editing, and am also new to editing Wikipedia. I already created a knitting pattern entry - odd that that didn't exist.
The numerous other knitting related paged like knitted fabric also need to be included. Knitting and Hand knitting are too large and sprawling, content needs to be moved off to other entries. For example, the History of knitting page is best as a separate page, it should be briefly summarized on Knitting.
I had some time, dove in, and finished a lot of the initial content moves. I focused on moving hand knitting info to the hand knitting page and off the knitting page. At some point, someone copied entire sections from one to the other - and they were modified. I picked whatever worked best.
I think a lot of the technical details of knitted fabric that make up knitting should be moved to the knitted fabric page and off the knitting page. Knitting should be about the process of creating knit fabric - it is a verb. I think the five methods of knitting described under tools should be made the primary point of the article.
I think that knitting machine and history need work too. There is almost nothing about hand crancked knitting machines, but they were a major cottage industry: a rich man would buy the machine, rent it to a tenant, and the tenant would crank out socks literally in a cottage. You can still buy them on ebay in working condition.
While working on this, I found there is no Wikipedia page for loom knitting. That is significantly different than the other forms of knitting, so really deserves its own article. Not sure how widespread it is, but my daughter does it.
As for arm knitting: I think it was a passing fad (a few ugly scarf patterns are left). I dropped that content. I dropped the glass knitting content too, since I only found one artist on the Internet who does/did it. Not encyclopedic.
