Expanding

I have done a quick expansion of this to put some info on Hans. If someone wants to do a larger expansion, there is a nice Obit on him written by Trevor Hambley in the Journal of Biological Inorganic Chemistry (2009, vol 14(3), pp. 327-328) and another from Mitchell Guss in Acta. Is there a chance to get his birth name? Freeman would be very strange for Germany at that point of time. [1] The names present in Breslau 1910 give no Freeman, but Freimann. I know that this is a chelenge!--Stone (talk) 09:56, 23 October 2010 (UTC)

I have no idea how to do this - family research is not my area. Can anyone else offer any help on establishing whether Hans had a different birth name? EdChem (talk) 12:34, 23 October 2010 (UTC)

If there is no source for it we can assume that he had no different birth name and it is OK, but I wanted to raise my suspicion.--Stone (talk) 19:31, 23 October 2010 (UTC)

Generally looks pretty good. A few comments:

• is the lead link to Australia necessary (I doubt there's many people who don't know what it is, and besides, it's already linked twice in the infobox)

In this edit, I changed the link to point to Australian which is the target of the redirect People of Australia, as the link should be about the people and not the country. EdChem (talk) 13:23, 20 November 2010 (UTC)

• acronym FAA linked in inbox not not explained or linked in article text

In this edit, I included a definition of FAA in the lead section. It indicates his Fellowship in the Australian Academy of Science. I have also defined AM, his other post-nomial honour. Both of these were already included in the Honours and awards section, just not with the abbreviations stated. EdChem (talk) 13:23, 20 November 2010 (UTC)

• the end of the last paragraph of "Legacy" should get cited, else it looks like wp:crystal balling ("Freeman's work in ensuring Australian scientists have access to "big science" facilities will continue to assist researchers into the future.")

• lead looks a little thin, maybe add a sentence about his early life and a little bit more about his career; there's currently no mention of his numerous prestigious awards either.

I have added that he was born in Germany to the lede, plus a sentence on his FAA and AM awards (diff), and a sentence on his teaching. I also expanded on his teaching in the career and legacy sections (diff). EdChem (talk) 14:52, 20 November 2010 (UTC)

Suggestions for FAC

A few suggestions to help with a possible FAC push: Sasata (talk) 16:02, 21 November 2010 (UTC)

• for a photo, I'd suggest emailing the Chemistry department of the U of Sydney. Explain to them what you're doing with the article, and my guess is they'd be happy to supply a photo to honour a colleague
• add a bit more detail (eg. a sentence or two) about what his doctoral work with biuret hydrate was about
• academic output: how many papers has he published? In a quick google search, I saw that his last paper was published posthumously, worth a mention I think
• any notable students?
• the "Personal life" section is thin…. any sources that could be used to expand this (even if only by a few sentences?)
• this mentions a symposium held to "mark his formal retirement"
• any info about the Hans Freeman Lectureship?

Thanks for the comments / suggestions. I have previously sent an email requesting a photo, without success, but will try again. I have also enquired about getting an image made of the biuret hydrate crystal structure. I think his total paper output was about 170 (recalling from the Guss obituary) but I'll look into it further. Further additions to follow later. EdChem (talk) 16:36, 21 November 2010 (UTC)
