DNQ,Retired or DSQ?[edit]

Should his F1 race be recorded as Did Not Qualify, Retired or Disqualified in the table? Technically it was all three but he did race, so I suppose it's one of the latter two. Does Disqualification take precedence over a retirement? Alexj2002 22:20, 3 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

It's really difficult! The way I've done the tables is the way I generally see stats done in books, on websites etc. In Heyer's case, I think he broke down and retired before he could be shown the black flag - I might be wrong, but I think that's what happened. Once he broke down, I guess the stewards didn't see the point in disqualifying him. If there was room in the table, it might be best if it said "DNQ/Ret" with a note to say he started illegally, but you'd then have a problem over what colour to make it.
To answer your question, a disqualification does take precedence over a retirement, but that assumes a disqualification has actually taken place! Of course, if Heyer had finished the race, or continued long enought to be black-flagged, it would be a DSQ, but at the moment I think "Ret" with an explanatory note is best. Any other opinions? Heyer never knew what trouble he was causing us when he sneaked into the race that day...! Bretonbanquet 19:05, 4 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Hans was disqualified and removed from the final results according to [[1]]. Although a black flag wasn't shown, many other drivers have been disqualified after the race of course (underweight, illegal parts etc.) and they tend to be listed as DSQ on Wikipedia (example Jenson Button disqualified from 2005 San Marino Grand Prix). At the end of the day, the table can't cope with this. None of the three options are satisfactory really. DSQ is all very well, but it doesn't explain that he actually failed to qualify. Can you be disqualified from a race you're not allowed to be in anyway? Forix has him as "retired" [[2]] with an explanatory note. (Forix is a pay-site, so that link might not work.) I suspect different sources will say different things. Steve Small's "Who's Who" has him as "DNQ/Ret". Also, I am not enough of a wizrd at designing tables to invent some clever way of explaining it all within the table :o) Bretonbanquet 17:10, 13 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]
