  • Born circa 1465, died 1524. [1]
  • Painter belonging to the Late Gothic. [1]
  • Had large workshop in Augsburg. [1]
  • His sons Hans Holbein the Younger and Ambrosius Holbein worked there. [1]
  • By 1514 the shop had shut down. [1]
  • Hans the Elder then moved to Issenheim, possibly around 1517. [1]
  • Chief work is an altar piece representing Saint Sebastian (1515/1517). [1]
  • Another work is Death of the Virgin, signed and dated 1496. [1]
  • Also left a sketchbook, containing mostly portraits, including a double portrait of Hans the Younger and Ambrosius. [1]
