Untitled[edit]

The creation of John's see of Caithness in 1189–1190 was undoubtedly intended to extend Scots authority in the region. The new bishopric was not uncontroversial and John soon came into conflict with Harald Maddadson and the Bishop of Orkney, Bjarni Kolbeinsson. The conflict, presented as a dispute overthe collection of monies for the papacy, a form of Peter's pence, was appealed to Pope Innocent III, who wrote to Bishop Bjarni and the Bishop of Rosemarkie (or Ross) to prevent John from interfering with the collection.

This letter can be found online here, but with the date given as 27 May 1198.

(Same site also has the letter from Innocent to Bjarne regarding the punishment of Lumberd [1]

Just a note. The Bishopric of Caithness was not a creation of 1189x1190; it dates to the 1140s if not earlier, as evidenced by a Gaelic-Latin charter issued at Aberdeen in the reign of David I:
Teste Gregorio episcopo de Dún Callden. Teste Andrea episcopo de Catenes. Teste Samsone episcopo de Brechin. Teste Doncado comite de Fíb, & Mal-Mori d' Athótla, & Ggille-Bríte comite d' Éngus, & Gille-Comded mac Æd, & Brócín, & Cormac de Turbrud, & Ádam mac Ferdomnac, & Gille-'ndrias mac Matni, apud Abberdeon.
The first bishop was a Gael called Aindréas, the source of much of de Situ Albanie. - Calgacus (ΚΑΛΓΑΚΟΣ) 16:03, 20 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

GA Nom Passed[edit]

Very nicely done. Well referenced, smoothly and clearly written. Next stop: peer review. --CTSWyneken(talk) 16:25, 21 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Earl of Orkney[edit]

Is there a particular reason for having "Earl of Orkney" as a part of the title? There isn't any other Harald Maddadsson to get this one confused with. Haukur 20:43, 25 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

In my opinion, no. It was originally called Harald Maddadsson. Angus McLellan (Talk) 08:18, 26 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
All right, I'll just move it back then - the long version seems a bit clumsy. Haukur 08:25, 26 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
And how about Magnus Erlendsson, Earl of Orkney, Turf-Einar, Earl of Orkney, Thorfinn Sigurdsson, Earl of Orkney and Sigurd Hlodvirsson, Earl of Orkney ? Magnus Erlendsson and Turf-Einar seem obvious enough. What do you think ? Angus McLellan (Talk) 12:25, 26 August 2006 (UTC) (P.S. I forgot Erengisle Suneson, Earl of Orkney (Erengisle Sunesson I presume) ![reply]
Suneson, not Sunesson, seems to be the correct spelling. Fornadan (t) 10:45, 27 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

GA Sweeps[edit]

This article has been reviewed as part of Wikipedia:WikiProject Good articles/Project quality task force in an effort to ensure all listed Good articles continue to meet the Good article criteria. In reviewing the article, I have found there are some issues that may need to be addressed. Fundamentally this is a good article, especially in its level of sourcing, which is excellent. There is however one significant issue, which is the standard of the prose, which comes across as if it is written in a saga style. This is all very well, but not very encyclopedic, so I recommend a thorough copyedit. Otherwise the article is fine.

I will check back in no less than seven days. If progress is being made and issues are being addressed, the article will remain listed as a Good article. Otherwise, it may be delisted (such a decision may be challenged through WP:GAR). If improved after it has been delisted, it may be nominated at WP:GAN. Feel free to drop a message on my talk page if you have any questions, and many thanks for all the hard work that has gone into this article thus far.
