Primary topic[edit]

Bagumba, regarding this edit summary, how can it be that Harold Steele is not the primary topic when it's the only article of that title? Looking forward to your reply; I might be learning something new. Schwede66 01:29, 8 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@Schwede66: No problem. I had to go into my history to jog my memory. I ran across Harold R. Steele on the Main Page, which was curiously piped to "Harry Steele". After some research, I generally agreed that "Harry Steel" was the WP:COMMONNAME (though there were a few "Harold" references to him), and moved that to Harry Steele (businessman). Going back to the archdeacon, the minimal viewership prompted me to boldy move it with the disambiguator (archdeacon). I'm sure it struck you that there was only one non-"see also" entry on the dab. I suppose Harold R. Steele can be added, though it was probably omitted because of my pet peave of large dabs like Richard Smith that duplicate entries for "Rick Smith" when a Rick Smith dab exists and is already a "see also". There are many different ways to handle this, and the guidelines offer little direct guidance, so input is welcome.—Bagumba (talk) 05:14, 8 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Bagumba, I see – Harry Steele (businessman) is the issue. But as I say, he's not titled Harold Steele. If I had encountered this situation, what I would have done is the following:
  • Add a hatnote to our archdeacon to say
  • Adjust the lead of the dab page to say "Harry or Harold Steele may refer to:"
  • Add the archdeacon to that dab page.
In that case, no dab page is needed for Harold Steele. The existing page page that you've created could be moved to (disambiguation) and redirected to the main dab page. How's that? Schwede66 07:29, 8 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]
There's also the misspelled Harold Steel, which I suppose could also be added to the hatnote. It feels like 6 of one, 1/2 dozen of another. This source refers to him as "Harold Steele", so some sources call him that. The fact that his article is named "Harry" is a technicality— we can only use one title, his common name. I don't put any extra weight that the archeacon page is named "Harold". I tend to be less creative in combining dabs, and am probably too anal about seeing Harold Steel having a hatnote to Harold Steele (disambiguation), which ends up being a redirect to Harry Steele. That aside, feel free to edit if you feel it's an improvement. And thanks again for bringing this up. Cheers.—Bagumba (talk) 08:00, 8 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Bagumba, yes, I've watchlisted this page. The source that you quote talks about "Harold Steele" as his father, but the page in question (Harold Steel) is a bio of somebody who died in 1911. That source would thus not be about him. Schwede66 08:34, 8 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I must have confused you. The CBC.ca source was referring to the father, "Harold Steele" (WP's Harry Steele (businessman). My reference to Harold Steel was a separate point, namely that a reader could misspell it as "Harold Steele", and if you go with the hatnote route for the archdeacon, Harold Steel should be included as a hatnote there as well.—Bagumba (talk) 08:53, 8 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]
