Damaged vision

[edit]

There's controversy now over the source of Greb's blindness. While the Norfolk fights were notriously rough, Norfolk is probably not to blame. I forget what fighter they now think was responsible for gouging Greb's eye and blinding it, but when I find it I'll probably edit the page. In the end we cannot be completely sure, so trying to take an empirical stand is impossible. However, in due fairness to "Kid Norolk" along with our responsiblity to the truth, I think we should mention all possiblities. Further, Greb was in so many fights and with so many rugged fighters, that the damage he suffered to both eyes, outside of the gouging he recieved from "Norfolk," it is understandable that he was going blind anyway; I don't know if this fact is stressed enough.

In regards to Grebs newspaper “loss” to Mike O’Dowd. Harry fought at 155 and was horribly over-trained. He spoke of his best fighting weight as 163. Despite this, twin city papers (O’Dowds hometown) were divided in their opinion on the winner of this fight.

In regards to Grebs blindness, those closest to him mentioned in numerous Pittsburgh paps that Harry thought it was the Bayonne Globetrotter Jeff Smith who did the deed. George Engel, his mgr at this point of his career was under the impression it was Stanley Roberts. Jimmy Mclarnin spoke of watching Harry from a ringside seat late in his career fighting with his head tilted sideways to accommodate his limited vision.

All in all, an amazing fighting machine say the least.

Added 'believed' to the paragraph about the Kid Norfolk fight blindness reference to at least refer to controversy over the source of Greb's blindness.

Also referred to Greb's fighting though blindness in the intro paragraphs as it is a frequently mentioned part of the narrative of his career. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.188.246.45 (talk) 05:35, 2 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Info Box

[edit]

Why is the boxer Curtis Joseph described in the infobox? I went to fix the coding, and found it all correct with Harry Grebs info. But upon viewing the page, it still shows this other boxers info!

Now I see every boxer with an infobox has this guy on it! Who screwed up the boxer infoboxes, more importantly how can someone fix it? User:RiverHockey

Greb Walker Streetfight

[edit]

I believe that there are many versions of this fight. Most I have read have Walker winning. However, from what I have read it seems quite possible that they did not have a full-blown brawl at all. John Lardner, who wrote a version favoring Greb, later recanted his version; and Walker and Kearn's versions were not consistent with one another. Also, Fleischer wrote that the fight was averted by outside interference. I wonder if the version in this article should be given as authoritative. 66.242.74.29 (talk) 23:30, 1 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Harry Greb is not part Irish

[edit]
@Ragomego: per Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard/Edit warring#User:Ragomego reported by User:77.99.249.77 .28Result: Protected .29 this dispute should be taken to the talk page even though I already tried to contact you on your user talk page.

Here is what is contained in the original source used from The Fearless Harry Greb: Biography of a Tragic Hero of Boxing "It has been said that Harry Greb was half Irish on his mother's side, but that is untrue. Both of Harry Greb's parents came from German families, with no Irish background whatsoever. It is believed this rumor was spread to help make Harry more marketable because Irish boxers drew better crowds."[1] 77.99.249.77 (talk) 18:03, 22 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]
