Pronouns[edit]

For future reference, I have used feminine pronouns throughout this article, because 1. reliable sources all use feminine pronouns, and 2. the character's fictional friends and family use feminine pronouns when alone. Reasons not to expand the plot and fictional information[edit]

Expanding the plot-section would make no sense in this case. As far as I am aware, all incarnations of Ouran follow the same plot structure (manga, anime, live-action drama, film), and I am not aware of Haruhi making any appearances in other media. A split "appearances" section is therefore useless.

Per guidelines such as WP:NOTPLOT and WP:FICTION, I attempt to keep the amount of in-unverse prose as short as possible. Much fictional information is simply not notable, as it isn't described by reliable sources. Describing the plot would just constitute to filling up the article with fancruft, honestly. Of course, I do want to give an appropriate amount of context, so that the reader understands Haruhi's basic characteristics and place in the story.

Knowledgekid87, what kind of in-universe information do you want added to the article? I suppose it doesn't mention Haruhi's parents, but seeing as reliable sources don't really talk about them either, I don't see why the article should. @Maplestrip: Here are some GA examples: Chi (Chobits), Alphonse Elric, Edward Elric, Himura Kenshin, Kira Yamato, Mello (Death Note), and Syaoran. In just about each case the manga or whatever work the character has a role in has been cited. Other stuff exist-reasoning aside, many of these articles are just reciting their work's plot? Take Edward Elric, for example:

During their search for the Stone, they become targets of Scar, a vengeful Ishbalan, and the immortal creatures known as the homunculi.[12] When Edward and Alphonse discover that the homunculi and the Philosopher's Stone are related, they work together with their comrades in order to find them.[13] However, after the Elric brothers meet the homunculi's creator, "Father," they are forced to keep working with the military by high-ranking officials who are secretly using their friends from Resembool as hostages.[14]

This is all sourced to primary sources, but I don't even see the point in that all being here. It even seems to be pushing WP:FAIR USE. Are editors deciding which plot points are notable? It seems to me that someone might as well create an article titled Plot of Fullmetal Alchemist, cover all of this there, and only give a small amount of information about the characters (for context) in their own articles...
I suppose I'm fine if this never reaches GA status; I just don't like seeing articles being diluted by plot information. Anyway, to answer your question, as far as I am aware, the anime, manga, live-action drama, and film all follow basically the same set-up. I'll try to find more about the film and the early drama cds, as they may have some big differences, but the anime, manga and tv series all have this format where every "episode" stands mostly on its own, and Haruhi doesn't have much of a character arc compared to the other characters. ~Mable (chat) 04:59, 19 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]
You make some good points, but there is also WP:PRECEDENT if you are going to cite essays. I can also point out some WP:FA class character articles which include sourced plot detail. Anyways the main character of the series "doesn't have much of a character arc compared to the other characters"? Sorry if it seems like I am pressing here but you are right when you say this article needs expansion. (Precedent is a good point). What I meant with Haruhi's comparative lack of a character arc is thus: In the anime, which is what I am most familiar with, Haruhi's character growth is subtle compared to the rest of the cast. She is a comedic foil to the eccentric cast of rich boys (as described in the article), and can be rather deadpan about it. In a way, she's the "normal" character. Male lead Tamaki has a major character arc where he gets to understand how important he is to the rest of the group and how he really feels about Haruhi. Side character Kyoya has a major character arc related to his place in his family. Side character Kaoru has a major character arc about his bonding issues, etc.
Throughout the anime, the main character arc of Haruhi is that he learns she does kinda like it in the host club. It's rather tame compared to all the other characters, and she is more of a instigator for other characters. This is why it would be hard to say much of value about the plot in this article.
If I would add something, as I have said, I would say something about Haruhi's deceased mother. She lives with her otokonoko father and even in her family, she's the "straight man". I would write about this if it was notable, but seeing as no reliable sources have written about it, I don't see the point. I know I am really strict about this - I know I go pretty far in this regard - but it's really just about minimizing original research ^_^;
And I also just really love development and reception information. It's why I'm here, really. If I wanted to write about my favorite characters, I would have just joined a fan wiki. The plot detail does not have to include intricate detail though. It is okay if you don't want to write the plot but I haven't seen the series yet here (sounds interesting though). Painfully, the only ship I can think of that I love is Bright/Mirai... I don't ship much ^_^; You really should watch Ouran, though: it's really great. The "bisexual characters" category was definitely original interpretation. As of Haruhi's gender identity: this is something a few of our sources latch onto fairly strongly, and I think Hatori implies it so strongly that there isn't really any reasonable doubt that she has a non-binary gender to some degree. Both transgender and LGBT might be incorrect terms to use here, though... and I'm not really sure about them either. ~Mable (chat) 06:48, 6 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Sex, Gender identity and Gender Roles[edit]

they should stop at writing on every bibliographic information wiki of the character that she knows "identifies as a biological female" (or just copy it) there is no such this as gender identity like this beyond personal consideration and she never says that on the show. She only says what is considered a woman and her comments about her are due to the confusion about what is hers because of her masculine presentation. If she considers herself a woman, it is simply because her identification is female (Which just means what is a cis woman, not that there is such a thing as "identified me as a biological female" why is that dumb), but she does not have problems or generate dysphoria by using masculine gender roles, and in fact, during the series she constantly questions them, which is very different from saying what is known. declares, or the author would never have said that sex did not matter. I comment on wikipedia because I don't see a possible modification in the ouran wiki and they have taken it as a kind of "slogan". さよさま (talk) 05:40, 21 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]

I will also add that having thought that before his statements only reinforces gender roles. And it is a lack of respect for any cis and trans person who has seen their identity violated (such as in documents or in public places) due to their gender presentation. I add, there are people who think that haruhi is a non-binary character, this could be true to a certain extent if it were not for the fact that in Japan the family registry on legal sex is something fucking difficult and this still applies to non-binary people. Also the Japanese term for enby is x-gender, and when they talk about biological sex they almost never refer to it as something that infers about their gender identity if the character they are talking about is trans.
