Is the BBC story not enough documentation for you? The event in question, you must note, is not any gay sex which may or may not have occurred; the event in question is the scandal, fueled by rumors of gay sex, which brought down Proctor's career. I couldn't care less who Procter slept with, but it's absolutely inarguable that the scandal occurred and that it is noteworthy, probably the most noteworthy event of Proctor's life.
