Health communication in multilingual societies

[edit]

Don't see any mention of linguistic dimensions of health communication in multilingual countries where not everyone speaks the same language and/or where many or most people primarily speak something other than the dominant or official language. This is a key characteristic of many societies in Africa and Asia for example. In the case of the ongoing Ebola virus epidemic in West Africa, for example, messaging has necessarily (if unevenly) been done in multiple languages. This raises issues about how to assure composing or translating information accurately in those languages, some of which may not have standardized writing systems or adequate terminologies, and may have dialect varieties. Health communication is not my field, so I'm checking to see if there is any expert who has looked systematically at multilingual health communication issues.--A12n (talk) 14:18, 31 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Health communication "communication strategies" question

[edit]

Under the Strategies and Methods section and subsection Communication Channels, three types of communication are mentioned but not elaborated further. Under direct marketing, would it be plausible to discuss generalized healthcare content in the form of print? With HIPPA compliance in mind, mass communication can be useful if promoted in a generalized form. In terms of social media/email/text messages, are these direct contact with patients or potential patients and if so, are they compliant with health communication regulations? I was tasked to ask one question about this page for my COM 300 class. My question would be: How is mental health and communication influenced by the social media world we live in today. Is it good or bad? I feel that it would have a negative effect because it takes away the person to person connection.Kreilly7 (talk) 18:24, 27 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]
