Misgendering in quotations

[edit]

This quotation uses incorrect pronouns 4 times in one sentence:

Reviewing for PopMatters, Paul Carr noted: "Whereas on previous albums, he would obscure himself behind the music, here he steps out of his sonic chrysalis, dons some shiny black wings and soars."

Seems absurd to drop in four square bracket corrections (like below) as this looks dumb, but I'm not sure how else to fix it.

Reviewing for PopMatters, Paul Carr noted: "Whereas on previous albums, [they] would obscure [themself] behind the music, here [they] steps out of [their] sonic chrysalis, dons some shiny black wings and soars."

What's the protocol here?
