12/10/15 Final Edit for Fall 2015 SLU BIOL 3010-02

[edit]

I did not change a lot; I added references at the end of each sentence, which were at the end of paragraphs originally. This was to address one of the peer reviews. The rest are minor edits, such as adding a word here and there to improve the readability. I added Helonias as an example in other two Wikipedia articles: Reproduction and Seed dispersal. 11/16/15 Krishna Vangipuram Edit

[edit]

Originally, this section of the article was one large paragraph with only one sub-heading. However, I split the content of the section into three sub-headings in order to better consolidate the information. The four sub-headings I added were Low Genetic Diversity, Mechanisms in Seed Dispersal, Limitations in Seed Dispersal, and the Risk of Self-Fertilization. Under each of the new headings, I consolidated pertinent information. I also edited a couple transition sentences to better improve the flow from one heading to another. Krish707 (talk) 01:19, 15 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

The most important sentence edits I made in this article was deleting ambiguous and vague vocabulary. Words like “probably” and “maybe” make the article sound somewhat opinionated, instead of based on fact. Krish707 (talk) 01:19, 15 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Important note to the author: Many of the sentences in the Genetic Variation Section of the article are not cited and just left un-cited. In text citations are important to ensure that in the case of future edits, all sentences are individually cited. Krish707 (talk) 01:19, 15 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Overall, I also believe that although this section focused on genetic variation in seed dispersal, I believe that genetic variation in other aspects of reproduction can also be mentioned to make the article more thorough. Krish707 (talk) 01:19, 15 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Previous Comments

[edit]

I reworded some of the sentences. Also, took out things that were not facts (more of opinions). I would watch out for those! Plantlover95 (talk) —Preceding undated comment added 22:10, 2 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Commenting on section added by Khzzang9 for BIOL 3010-2 In the habitats section, the detail in this section is very helpful. In the section on Vitiation in Genetic Diversity, the different sections with the section are very convenient and organize the information well. I also like that why low genetic diversity is bad for the population is explained. Some ideas for the next edit would be maybe expand more on genetic diversity and why it is good/bad. Also numbers may be helpful in the poaching section to help visualize how many plants are taken each year versus the number of pink flowers that come up again every year (if this information is available). Unfortunately, as of now only the fact that poaching is threatening Helonias is available but not the exact numbers. I will try to find such source in hope to visualize the fact. Khzzang9 (talk) 05:52, 9 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Peer Edits/ Suggestions

[edit]

I went through and made sure species names were italicized. Another important thing to remember is citations in order that your content does not get removed for plagiarism. One suggestions I have for the structure of the article is to combine some of the information in the introduction with the information in the section called 'Illegal Poaching'. Some of the information was repetitive and may have helped the article have a better flow if it was combined in a section with all the information about why Helonias is a threatened species such as poaching and what the U.S.F.W.S. has done to conserve it. One final suggestion would be to hyperlink a couple of the terms to other Wiipedia articles in order to facilitate the reader's understanding a bit better. For example, 'rhizomatous' and 'basal rosette' are not very common terms to those who do not study plants. Overall though, great information about how various aspects of this plant's survival are related directly to evolutionary theories and ideas!
