Helophilus means swamp-lover (from ancient greek Ηλος / Helos, « march, swamp» ;not Ηλιος / Helios, « sun» ). This insect loves water...


Some expansion ideas: there's still plenty that can be added before this article can be considered comprehensive - e.g. larval morphology, more about food, distribution (other countries) SP-KP 08:59, 2 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

A correction seems to be needed to the description - here it links the nickname "Footballer" to the colours/patterns on the abdomen, but the article it cites states that the nickname is due to the stripe pattern on the thorax. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 81.187.185.233 (talk) 15:01, 23 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
