Untitled[edit]

Most known for what he did during WWI?? If so then why is that section the shortest? Either that claim needs to be removed or that section needs to be buffed up! —Preceding unsigned comment added by Weldun (talkcontribs) 02:55, 27 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I would suggest you look into researching and writing that section, Weldun. I wrote what I knew about. T L Miles (talk) 00:55, 16 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Contradiction[edit]

The article says:

Between 20 January and 10 February 1920 Gouraud's troops routed Turkish National Forces at the Battle of Maraş.

But the article on the Battle of Maraş says it was a Turkish victory. 217.133.55.7 (talk) 23:09, 15 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I would compare the references on the two articles, specifically concerning this battle. A quick look Battle of Maraş suggests that article has no references. T L Miles (talk) 00:52, 16 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
The best I could find were links from the Franco-Turkish War article. These suggest that French forces may have defeated Turkish Military forces, but were unable to hold on to the City in face of a popular revolt, and Gouraud led THIS stage, not the initial occupation in 1919-1920. I've corrected this section in line with Battle of Maraş and Franco-Turkish war articles: but this section still needs better English language sources. Attributed Anecdote[edit]

"He is remembered in the Levant primarily for this role, and for an attributed anecdote which portrays him as the epitome of Western triumphalism in the Middle East."

Presumably this refers to the story that he banged his sword on Saladin's tomb and proclaimed "Saladin, we have returned". Surely the story ought to be spelled out in the article for the benefit of those who do not know it. If reputable historians have cast doubt on its veracity, their views, properly cited, can also be added.
