David Abraham Affair[edit]

Like it or not, within the academic world, Turner is known for the David Abraham affair, especially among scholars who do not specifically specialise in German history. One cannot gloss over or ignore this episode, and I would ask editors not to delete that section from the article. Poldy Bloom 06:28, 30 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The David Abraham section of the article ignores the most notable feature of that affair: Henry A. Turner's use of privately circulated letters to discredit Abraham, which did not allow him the opportunity to respond. This was a large part of what made the episode controversial. It disturbed many historians (and not just "Marxists") because it looked like an established and powerful figure in the profession using private influence against someone just starting out, for personal reasons. Apart from the merits of the case, that ugly impression is the best-known aspect of Professor Turner's career (and will no doubt be included in his obituary); hence its notability from the Wikipedian standpoint. 152.160.39.70 (talk) 18:43, 4 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Contrary to what 152.160.39.70 (at the University of Michigan) wrote about Professor Turner's obituary five month's before Turner's death, his various obituaries did not portray him as leading an underhanded smear-campaign against Abraham. Those obituaries that mentioned the Abraham affair did so in a dispassionate and accurate way. Poldy Bloom (talk) 23:40, 9 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I have condensed the two paragraphs on the Abraham affair (one preexisting and one added by 69.172.105.132) into one paragraph. I have also added several citations, including one to Gerald Feldman's article about the affair and one to the special issue of Radical History Review in which a line-up of Abraham's allies criticized Turner and Feldman. Editors of / contributors to this article need to beware of non-NPOV statements. This article should not become a venue for re-fighting the Abraham controversy of 25 years ago. Additionally, this article should not primarily be about the Abraham affair. That seems to have been only one aspect of Turner's career, and not the most significant from a scholarly perspective.
