He also volunteered to fight in the First World War at the age of 17. He survived the war and was chosen at the end of the war to remain as one of the few chosen to be in the post-ww1 forces which were limited to 100,000 personell but allowed by the victorious WW1 Allies to exist in order to maintain or and combat the rise of communism in Germany.
