Sutton Hoo helmet[edit]

At the moment there is more information on the Sutton Hoo helmet than Maryon himself-- should this be split off into its own article? The helmet is certainly notable enough in its own right to justify a standalone article.[1][2] mineffle ^(talk) 09:25, 7 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the suggestion @Mineffle:! You're definitely right that the helmet could use its own article, although I think such an article would have to go far beyond the scope of what's included in this one. Most of the scholarship today is understandably focused on the current reconstruction of the helmet, whereas Maryon's work was dismantled in 1970. See Marzinsik, 2007 (describing Maryon's work in one paragraph before moving on to the "re-reconstruction"); Bruce-Mitford, 1978 (describing the process from first to second reconstruction in two sentences). Although a truly comprehensive article on the helmet would include much of what is included here, its emphasis would be on the information that is not included here.

As to Maryon himself, he is best remembered for his Sutton Hoo work, and, within that, for his work on the helmet; it's what led to his OBE, and perhaps his fellowship with the Society of Antiquaries. In general, I think it makes sense for the most substantial part of the article to be about the most substantial part of Maryon's legacy. There's probably a middle ground between including the information here, and including it in an article on the helmet, although a prerequisite to that middle ground is a new article that emphasizes the second reconstruction.

You are also right that the article could use a bit more diversity. I was thinking of adding some information on Maryon's earlier career (e.g., his time at the Keswick School of Industrial Art), I just haven't got there yet—and, honestly, there just isn't as much information on it. Thanks for your reply @Usernameunique:! In that case, I will work on starting the Sutton Hoo helmet article this weekend. (I am quite surprised there's not one already given the amount written about it and the sparse detail in the Sutton Hoo article...) I will try to get a simple article started and up over the weekend, and then transfer some of the details from this article. I am not hugely familiar with the topic and don't have access to paper resources, though, so would appreciate any input from you if you have time :) mineffle ^(talk) 04:38, 8 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Sounds great @Mineffle:! As a preliminary matter, I ended the redirect on the Sutton Hoo helmet article (previously went to Sutton Hoo), and added a few sentences of information as well as the relevant bibliographical material. The most important ones are Bruce-Mitford 1978, Bruce-Mitford 1972, Williams 1992, and Maryon 1947. I have copies of each that I would be more than happy to forward to you if you like.
