Image Decoration

Do we need a glorified image and frame of Rav Schachter? No, just the normal frame. His birth date and place of birth should be included only in the article, not in a special side template such as those used for towns and occasions. Very few people have these special templates in their articles - and certainly no Rabbis that I've yet seen. Nesher 13:21, 29 May 2006 (UTC)

Because it does not add anything. And why don't Rabbis Yosef Shalom Eliashiv, Norman Lamm, Shlomo Amar, Yisrael Meir Lau, Yona Metzger, Jonathan Sacks, Yakov Aryeh Alter etc etc etc have one? Many thanks, Nesher 14:04, 29 May 2006 (UTC)

Copyediting points

A few points about the copyediting in this article.

1. I do not believe we need to translate Semicha, as it is wikilinked already and if anyone is uncertain as to what it means, a simple click will resolve that.
2. If we are going to capitalize the 'T' in Tzon due to the Hay Hayediah in front, shouldn't we capitalize the 'I' in I'kvei after the Bais?
3. Neither HaRav Hirschprung nor HaRav Lifshutz have wiki articles yet, why are they wikilinked?
4. I think the Hebrew name of the sefarim should be bolded and italicized.
5. The "Since 1971…" sounds to passive to me, I think it should be rewritten in a more active voice.
6. Yes, we talk about "giving" Semicha (I have Yoreh Yoreh twice) but in a professional article, I believe the proper verb is "granted," or even better "received Semicha," as it is permission to pasken (L'hyos Rav U'Moreh B'Yisrael) and not just a sheepskin.
7. Why is HaRav Belsky mentioned in this article? If we're bringing in the entire OU, where is Rav Genack :)

Removal of my edits by Hoopydink and Avraham

Yes, I have heard Rabbi Schachter put on the same stool as Rabbi Chaim Kanievsky (or was in Kaminetsky...?) and from a chareidi Rosh Yeshiva. Rabbi Yosef Shalom Eliashiv is accepted by a large amount, probably the vast majority, of us in the chareidi world as the top gadol hador; I'm referring to Rav Schacter as one of the gedolei hador. I admit, however, that I am lacking sources and shouldn't have edited so hastily. --Yodamace1 09:24, 15 June 2006 (UTC)

When I was in yeshiva Rav Schachter visited and had a Q&A. The question of who is a godel came up. He said that there are limited but significant halakhic consequences of someone being a godel. As I recall he does not believe that anyone today has that status, though he might have (the student did not agree on what they heard) implied that he himself is a candidate. In any event the word godel here is used colloquially not halakhicly so this is really not an issue. Jon513 11:27, 15 June 2006 (UTC)

I would not argue with the fact that Rav Schachter may be considered a gadol today, but gadol hador is a completely different shlav. -- Avi 12:07, 15 June 2006 (UTC)
