Trews

[edit]

Why did they wear trews? Bastie 16:32, 11 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

HLI

[edit]

The HLI were known as "Hell's Last Issue", chiefly because recruits came from the poor and often violent slums of Glasgow. I had a patient who was in the HLI in immediate post-war period. He said the HLI had three times the normal amount of standing orders due to the propensity of the troops to cause trouble. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 58.165.65.142 (talk) 11:05, 10 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

David Niven in the HLI

[edit]

Two minor edits to this section - British Army officers are appointed to particular regiments, not assigned (a subtle difference). Also the Sandhurst document referred to was a choice of regiment preference form - not a recruitment one. The story about "anything but the Highland Light Infantry" is a good yarn but a highly unlikely one - Niven's autobiography is a rather whimsical one. Regimental pride was taken very seriously in the peacetime regular army of the 1930s and even the War Office would not be foolish enough to force an officer into a unit that he disliked - hence the four options given. It was different in wartime of course. 210.246.12.58 (talk) 00:01, 11 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Unofficial motto

[edit]

I heard that an unofficial motto of the HLI was Guns and bullets we don't need; just a razor: wheech, ye're deid!. If this is correct and can be cited it may be worth adding. Mutt Lunker (talk) 14:05, 15 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]
