* A short (one-to-three sentence) introduction at the start of the article would be useful.[edit]

  • More hyperlinks within the text, offering further information on key terms, places, events, and ideas, would be useful.
  • "Even though there was no pre-modern Japanese nationality in a practical sense, the idea of Japan as a nation was a topic for scholarly inquiry for much of the Tokugawa period." I understand the distinction you're making between nationality and nation, but it may not be clear to every reader.
  • Why did early Meiji practices have to conform to Western norms? What were these norms?
  • Any Japanese terms that are not linked to articles should be briefly defined (e.g. bushi).
  • Can you offer a brief description of whatever system (feudalism?) nationality replaced in the nineteenth century?
  • Was Meiji government control of passports the same thing as control of migration?
  • The section on territorial expansion is suggestive and promising, but difficult to make sense of at present, both due to lack of detail and unclear organization.
