This article badly needs some pre-European history; surely there were people here before 1500 CE? --Dvyost 07:28, 16 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Slavery

[edit]

The article seems to take great pains to argue that the slavery practised by indigenous Africans was nicer and gentler than European slavery and the institution in general was entirely introduced by Europeans to the area.

This may well be true, but I remain somewhat sceptical. There is sufficient evidence of slavery (in one forms or another) as a pre-European cultural institution elsewhere within West Africa, though the forms it took were far less barbarous and systematic than what the Europeans later did. I would find it surprising if no one in Sierra Leone did anything of the kind, and the whole presentation seems to be bending over backwards to excuse indigenous African slaveowners. --Saforrest (talk) 19:50, 13 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Cutting hands in Sierra Leone

[edit]

For some reason this part disappeared, but is is highly important that it stays put. The atrocities committed by the British while conquering Sierra Leone are very scarcely researched for some reason, and the fact they used hand cutting during their usurpation is important information.
