Moved from article

[edit]

Moved from article due to improper formating: 84.228.171.185: "The portuguese Capitão Barros Basto was a Marrano, not Ashkenazi, & he didn't find the Belmonte Crypto-Jews. These were discovered [1917] by the Ashkenazi egineer from Poland Samuel Schwartz, who wrote a book about them [1925; 2nd edition 1993, translated into Hebrew: Sept. 2005]. Most of this group [about 85/~120(±10)] converted into Normative-Judaism [1992-3], after creating conventional community-institutions. Nowadays they practice Jewish marriges, Brith-Mila & other Jewise rites, pray in Hebrew, have a synagogue etc. For recent information in Hebrew [1994-2000] see <www.mybelmonte.com> written by me: Dr. Sara Molho, a Israeli sociologist, who used to visit there & lived with them a while."

Spanish and portuguese sephardim contradiction

[edit]

This page is contradicting with the article on SPanish and portuguese sephardim, that article says theyve modelled themselves after english conservative jews and this article says they are orthodox —Preceding unsigned comment added by 74.72.241.193 (talk) 07:27, 10 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Rich Sephardic tradition of Crypto-Judaism???

[edit]

The Belmonte Jews considered themselves Jews and their neighbors usually referred to them as Jews, but they did not keep Jewish traditions, only some religious acts and praises that originated form Jewish traditions. Today, a small part of them joined the mainstream Judaism and returned to Jewish traditions.
