Getting the ball rolling

[edit]

This article remains a stub. Gibmetal I leave it to you to improve it! Good Luck!--Burgas00 03:26, 6 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

By the way, do you guys have any info on the use of Maltese in Gib today? Does anyone still use it? Might be worth mentioning. Also mentioning a few famous Gibraltarians of Maltese heritage...--Burgas00 20:22, 8 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Right, we've got the ball rolling now which is good. I havn't yet been able to find sources that verify the use of Maltese in Gibraltar but it definitely is in use within some families. I have basic knowledge of the language as my mother speaks it and I've seen my mother speak to different people in Gib purely in Maltese! Peter Caruana is of Maltese descent. We definately need more sources. I'll see what I can do myself to improve. Anyone considering buying the book that Gibnews mentioned Twin Rocks? Gibmetal 77talk 20:47, 8 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Well, so far we can include a section on notable Maltese Gibraltarians, Caruana being the most famous one I guess, and a section on the influence of the Maltese on Llanito and Gib culture... --Burgas00 14:15, 10 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I already added the section on notable Gibraltarians of Maltese descent. I added Caruana but I'm having some trouble thinking of who else to include. Don't forget the Maltese influence on Gibraltarian cuisine! Gibmetal 77talk 14:52, 10 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I rephrased some introductory sentences recently, but the rest needs to be rewritten. Most has been copied-and-pasted from the source. -- Chris Btalk 14:56, 10 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Wouldn't the word Notable be better than Famous in Famous Gibraltarians of Maltese Descent. Just a suggestion. Gibmetal 77talk 17:54, 10 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

hehe yep, I guess it would. Not to sure about the last one though... Its pushing it a bit :-) --Burgas00 00:08, 11 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I added Dr. Zammit because he received an MBE some months before his death due to his cultural teachings to local youth through his dramatical productions. I might need to rephrase his description a bit better. Gibmetal 77talk 00:21, 11 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Genoa

[edit]

Is there any particular reason why people from Genoa, Italy as well as Maltese immigrated to Gibraltar? - Soprani 06:43, 14 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

The main reason was that a civilian workforce was required by the garrison to run Gibraltar. Due to the British connections with Genoa and Malta at that time, many people from those places were recruited to Gibraltar. The Genoese were mainly fishermen and traders of all sorts. The Maltese who moved to Gibraltar were mainly boat workers and other labourers who took up required jobs at the dockyard. They were also owners and drivers of the horse drawn carriages (Maltese: Carozzin), which were first introduced to Gibraltar by the Maltese.
The book The Gibraltarian by H.W. Howes goes into some detail as to the role that these people played in the running of the garrison at that time.Gibmetal 77talk 11:58, 16 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
