A hivernage camp at Fréjus

... that during the First World War, Senegalese Tirailleurs would be withdrawn from the Western Front to overwinter in camps in the south of France or northern Africa (example pictured)? "Added to this, the black Africans who were used to a much warmer climate were suffering from the cold damp climate of northern France. The army sent these men to southern France or to North Africa in what became known as hivernage" from: page 45 of Dean, William (2010). This interesting article is new enough and long enough. The image is suitably licensed, the hook facts are cited inline, the article is neutral, and I detected no copyright issues.
