Merge

[edit]

I propose a merge with Sudbrooke as a short para add. There is very little to be found on this now nonexistent settlement, and it is entirely within Sudbrooke. Acabashi (talk) 20:24, 14 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

There has been a lot of movement in the Lincolnshire articles. When I first started editing we tended to produce a single article for a civil parish, with sections for hamlets, DMVs, archaeological sites, schools, churches and notable people, very much as per the WP guidelines on writing about places. But there have been various campaigns since then to split things up: to have a separate entry for every village or hamlet, and a different one for the civil parishes, another one for each school, another (grin) for each church. Frankly, I don't think that either one approach is 'right' - people should be allowed to write the articles they want to write.

The separate article idea ties in very much better with the idea of categories. It is stupid enough appending Category:Deserted medieval villages in Lincolnshire to places like Graby that have just moved a bit but are still inhabited. Appending the same thing to Billingborough because of Birthorpe is just daft. And you end up with a category page where things are indexed by entirely the wrong name.

Then atrocities like Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Bourne Westfield Primary School where one school in a town was subject to the delete police, but not the other (!) and Category:Primary schools in Lincolnshire is made difficult to maintain (I notice it is now much smaller, presumably other pages fell victim). So I don't think there is a right answer - both the merge and separate article paths show up weaknesses in the way WP is planned (why can't you categorise a section, instead of a whole article?).

There was a campaign to catalogue all the DMVs in Lincolnshire, along with a nav box that listed them all and a list page too. Those last two seem to have been expunged but a handful of the potential members are still around. The natural corrolery of this is that Category:Deserted medieval villages in Lincolnshire could probably go as well, leaving just List of lost settlements in the United Kingdom

So basically, I see no harm in a merge but people with other interests or projects in mind might. I think it is worth talking at the Lincolnshire project talk page or at Talk:List of lost settlements in the United Kingdom or at Talk:Abandoned village - although it is clear from reading both of those that the massive effort to catalogue all of them has largely been deleted, so I would be prepared to bet you could go ahead. But equally, the world would not become a measureably better place for this small act of tidying.--Robert EA Harvey (talk) 15:35, 30 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
