Award winning choirs section placement

[edit]

Mikeycanuck: rather than enter an edit war, you are invited to discuss this subject. The rationale for placing this section directly after the article's lead is drawn from the school's website:

"At Holy Name of Mary College School, vocal music is a key focus and our vocal music programs allow each student to develop lifelong skills. Our award-winning choir programme welcomes new students from grades 5-8 in the junior choir and in grades 9-12 in the senior choir. The choir is a key component of life at HNMCS and performs regularly both inside and outside the school." http://www.holynameofmarycollegeschool.com/hnmcs-choir-s13892

While there are many aspects to the school, the vocal music program is singled out as "a key focus". 174.91.74.20 (talk) 03:15, 13 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

No school mentions awards for a single extracurricular activity before its history and mission. See for instance, St Michael's College School or Upper Canada College. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Mikeycanuck (talkcontribs) 01:36, 19 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Certain schools mention extracurricular activities before their History or Tradition section. A cursory search produced three examples: Father Michael Goetz Secondary School, Elmwood School (Ottawa), St. Mary's Academy (Winnipeg). There are undoubtedly many more examples. 174.91.74.20 (talk) 02:38, 19 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

If the school's mission statement and Catholic identity inform all that goes on in a Catholic school, it is logical that it is more important than an extracurricular activity. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Mikeycanuck (talkcontribs) 02:41, 19 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Mikeycanuck: You stated, "No school mentions awards for a single extracurricular activity before its history and mission." This was shown to be incorrect, and examples were provided where school wiki pages mention extracurricular activities before their History or Tradition sections. You now claim the mission statement and Catholic identity are "logically" more important than an extracurricular activity. The choir at HNMCS, according to the school's website, "is a key component of life at HNMCS and performs regularly both inside and outside the school." The school website also states the choir is a, "wonderful reflection of our community." These choirs are singled out as being an integral part of the life of the school. The choirs reflect the Catholic identity of the school, praising God through music. The song choices listed on the wiki include Ave Maria, Pie Jesu, Lift Thine Eyes, Raise Me Up, and A Blessing; these reflect the Catholic identity of the school. The integration of Catholic identity through the vocal music program, along with the noteworthy accomplishments of the choirs, justifies the placement of the section directly after the lead. 174.91.74.20 (talk) 05:57, 19 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

The choir may very well be an important extracurricular and reflect the school's Catholic mission. The logic of placing it before the mission statement of the school, which directs all aspects of the school's life, is weak. The president's welcome message on the school's website doesn't mention the choir specifically, or place it as more important than many other aspects of the school's life. No doubt all of the school's clubs are a reflection of the Catholic mission of the school. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Mikeycanuck (talkcontribs) 18:27, 19 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
