Constantinople removed from list

[edit]

I removed Constantinople since it has never been synonymously referred to as 'the "holy city" of Constantinople' unlike Jerusalem, Mecca, or Rome. It was referred most often as 'the imperial city of Constantinople' but traditionally never ascribed as "holy city". And can someone make a disambiguation page for Holy City, Calif. Thanks. Dr mindbender 20:36, 20 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Constantinople was not just a holy city, it was THE holy city of Christianity; long before even Rome was Christian. The city was ruled by Christian Emperors who held the status of "God's will on earth." Indeed, the Empire of Heaven. Constantinople was the very first Christian capital city to ever exist. When the city fell to Islam in 1453 the Pope called a (short-lived) Crusade to reclaim the city for Christianity. The Holy Bible was compiled inside the Byzantine/Easter Roman Empire, in which Constantinople was the head. The Orthodox Christian Church of Hagia Sophia was the most important Christian Church in the world, long before the Christian split of the Latin West and Greek East in the year 1054. To say that Constantinople is not thought of as a Holy City is an insult, not only to the worlds 350 million Orthodox Christians (and all Christians everywhere) but is also an insult to historical truth. Please do your research before you edit information you have limited understanding of. I am not trying to make an argument between Western and Eastern perceptions of history - but you clearly have a Western view of the subject. Odd considering the Pope regularly visits the Orthodox Patriarch in Constantinople and in 2004 returned the looted bodies of two Saints to the holy city, among other holy relics. Ask any Catholic clergy if Orthodox Constantinople is a Holy City; they will tell you 'absolutely.'--Nikoz78 (talk) 17:05, 23 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

Is there a page listing cities that are nicknamed "the holy city"? I'd wager there are a few out there--my hometown, Charleston (SC), is an example. It doesn't fit the list of cities that are loci of particular religions, but Chx does have a strong religious history (e.g., the Jewish population in the 18th century) and a high density of churches per capita. Any other towns like this? Dan3t 05:57, 7 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Please check Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/List of holy cities. This page should be deleted, as its predecessor was. --Ghirla-трёп- 07:27, 7 June 2007

HOLY CITIES OF SOUTH ASIA

Why Chidambaram(India),Sri Naguleswaram(Sri Lanka),Srirangam(Tirupati is secondary to Srirangam) and Madurai is not listed. These place were holiest and very significant in term of religious history according to Nayanmars Saivism and Alvars Vaishnavism.--Rajendra Prasath Arumon 17:11, 18 May 2012 (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Rajendra Prasath Arumon (talkcontribs)

Wittenberg

[edit]

Wittenberg is known as the "birthplace" of Lutherism, but calling it a "holy city" seems outright silly. The term would be contradictory to Luther's teachings who denied papal primacy and told that the Bishop of Rome was not more important than other bishops. -- 2003:E2:AF2A:4355:1004:4A8B:B503:3EED (talk) 09:37, 16 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Jerusalem -which country is it in.

[edit]

If Palestine is a country please send me a map of it. What’s its language ? What’s its currency ? Who governs it ? When was it established ? Name me a past ruler? Does it have an Army? Does it have a Navy? Does it have an Airforce? In Jerusalem, you speak Hebrew, you spend shekels,The Israeli Army,Airforce,Police Force ensure law and order. The Knesset is in Jerusalem -Israeli seat of Government. Where is the Palestinian Government (Palestinian Authority) based? Answer-Not Jerusalem Wiki may not like the answers to the questions but the facts are indisputable. If you can answer the questions asked I would be happy to stand aside. If not then I would expect to see Jerusalem being based in Israel. Many thanks Heoff500 (talk) 16:45, 21 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

  • Pushing your viewpoints about the legitimacy of Palestine aren't the point of this article nor an appropriate use of Wikipedia. The article Status of Jerusalem shows how contentious this point is. It is probably best to reflect this conflict with the entry reading Palestine/Israel (contested). --Cerebral726 (talk) 17:39, 21 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Vatican Ciity - Holy Cty in Islam

[edit]

The page lists the Vatican City as a Holy City in Islam, is this correct? There's no citation on the page, nor mention of it in the Vatican City article, and it just seems off to me too? SlakaJ (talk) 17:19, 29 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I agree. I went ahead and removed it. --Cerebral726 (talk) 20:22, 29 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]
It's the same problems for the notion that New York City is a holy city in Christianity and Judaism. – MrPersonHumanGuy (talk) 23:45, 5 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I agree with this as well so I went ahead and removed it. Unfortunately this whole article is in pretty poor shape. We may need to just completely raze anything that we can't find a source for given how many speculative or just plain wrong additions there are.--Cerebral726 (talk) 13:55, 8 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Blackpool?

[edit]

In what sense is Blackpool a holy city? I've never heard that claim before, this article gives no evidence for it, and the Blackpool article makes no mention of it. This article also list Walsingham - which from the Article is probably valid, but the cited source ("The Top Write Your Own Gadgets & E-commerce Product Reviews") is completely irrelevant. Iapetus (talk) 16:02, 21 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Addendum: Blackpool was added as a replacement for Canterbury by an anonymous user on 23/01/2023 with the edit summary "correcting a typo". I have reverted this vandalism. The reference for Walsingham was originally 10 Holy places to go on Pilgrimage, which is no longer valid. It was changed to the current reference as part of a mass update of references by User:RoanokeVirginia on 28/06/2021. The other changes look valid, so I presume this was just user error rather than vandalism. I'll remove it for now. There are probably some usable references on the Walsingham page that could be copied here. Iapetus (talk) 16:18, 21 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Sorting

[edit]

Should these not be sorted by religion instead of region? So cities that are considered important to multiple religions get listed multiple times Alexanderkowal (talk) 15:52, 20 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Also Zoroastrian, Confucian, Baha'i holy sites are omitted.
