History

The history section is pretty incomplete. Anybody want to add to it? Pianoguy 19:03, 3 December 2007 (UTC)

It doesn't have any information beyond the fact that it was founded by Van Raalte and when it first admitted women. The year of the first graduating class is not even given. There's a lot of information that can be added, including, but not limited to: the change of Hope from essentially a Dutch-speaking college to an English institution around 1900, the presidency of Gerrit Kollen and the rapid expansion of Hope at that time (including the building of what is now Voorhees, Graves, and other important buildings that are no more, such as Van Raalte Hall and Carnegie gym), the building of Dimnent Chapel on the eve of the great Depression, the rapid expansion of the college post World-War II, the presidency of Calvin VanderWerf in the 1960's which attempted to make the college more liberal and ultimately failed, the presidency of Gordon VanWylen in the 1970's and early 1980's and the controversial firings of non-Christian professors, the huge campus-wide protests over mandatory chapel attendance in the 1960's which resulted in many students being suspended and drated to fight in the Vietnam War, the building of DeWitt as a student center complete with a bowling alley, the burning of Van Raalte Hall in the 1980's which resulted in DeWitt being taken over for adminstrative use, the gradual change from Hope as essentially a feeder for Western Sem in its early history to a more secular liberal arts school, something about the history of Hope's relationship to the RCA. hmmm... well maybe some of the "firsts" would be good. but not everything listed needs to be in there. Like Dimnent, or World War II, DeWitt built, things like that. I must admit I am impressed with your knowledge, but some of that is minutiae and not necessary. Hopefully we can add some of that in soon.

Athletics

I feel the scores to the games are not needed for this article. If someone feels this is absolutely necessary please include a link so as to avoid cluttering the page.

The information on the ESPN poll is extremely misleading and I do not think it merits inclusion on this page. You will recall that the results of this poll were influenced by the college, which encouraged its students and alumni to log on and vote for the survey. In return ESPN provided free cable for one year to on-campus housing.

If someone feels this needs inclusion it will be necessary to include a more detailed explanation. Pianoguy 05:27, 27 March 2007 (UTC)

Scores, no.

I was on campus, though, during the ESPN poll. Yes, we were encouraged to vote, but so were other schools. I don't recall anyone receiving free cable after that. I'm not sure where you've gotten your information.

Alumni

Can somebody go through and explain all the professor additions to the alumni and why they are significant, just for clarification. Please put this information in the article- remember to explain why they are especially notable. We can't list all professors that graduate from Hope- so putting something like, "Professor Brown of Harvard, inventor of the [whatever] will help clarify who does and who does not belong on this list. Why is Rob 'CmdrTaco' Malda being removed? This is the second time it's been removed without any reason. I think it's an important piece of information.

I removed the asterisk from the Sufjan Stevens entry. He graduated in 1998, as reflected in various Hope College publications. This article, for example, includes language explicitly stating that he graduated: https://magazine.hope.edu/wp-content/uploads/2016/11/2004-NfHC-June.pdf. Janet Chandler

Ok, I realize that the school doesn't really want the whole deal in here, esp. the Public Relations dept, but it is pertinent news to Hope College. Besides, isn't it good press that people from the school helped solve it? May we please put back some details? We can spare the gory ones, those aren't necessary. It's infamous, not famous, but still part of Hope's history. Doesn't Janet deserve that? Bouncehoper 19:03, 22 February 2007 (UTC)

Merge

Phi Kappa Alpha is a unique institution to Hope College. Both would benefit from being in the main article. The sources are thin to find the independent importance of this article. I will merge unless someone has a good reason "why not". --Stormbay (talk) 04:30, 17 November 2007 (UTC)

The logo used on this page is incorrect. The correct logos are available here: http://www.hope.edu/pr/media/logos.html

The logo being used was pulled from hope.edu, and is a modification of the logo and not the proper use of the logo. Michigander300 (talk) 18:06, 10 December 2010 (UTC)

The official Hope College logo has been revised. I work at Hope in the newly formed Integrated Marketing office. I would appreciate the replacement of the logo with this file: https://www.dropbox.com/s/dmbdxsgzb2rexp5/Hope-College-Logo.svg but I am not currently able to edit on Wikipedia, as I'm not a "confirmed user". Thanks. I uploaded the new version of the wordmark (after trimming the margins in the svg you helpfully provided).
I also removed the COI template that was added to the article. It seemed to be inaccurate in that the new editor who has identified as being connected with the college didn't actually make any edits to the article but has only made one edit in Talk. ElKevbo (talk) 15:53, 12 September 2013 (UTC)

Class information

Is it really necessary to have in-detail descriptions of the various gen-ed requirements at Hope College? A lot of these really aren't that different from the requirements of most other liberal arts colleges (with the exception of the religion classes, but that's to be expected of a Christian school). And while I got rid of most of it, a lot of the language in there was promotional-sounding, against Wikipedia's Manual of Style, and with that gone it kind of doesn't make sense why the info is there in the first place. @Beggarsbanquet: - I've removed the entire section per WP:NOT (indiscriminate collection of information) and WP:UNDUE. If this information was important, it would be discussed by independent sources. But there is no evidence that such independent sources exist, and, as you point out, no reason to believe that they would, since the requirements aren't particularly unusual. -- John Broughton (♫♫) 19:28, 12 September 2013 (UTC)
I agree that the material was too detailed and unsourced but if all students are required to adhere to the requirements then that gives them some inherent importance and interest. They may merit a brief mention in an appropriate place in the article although they don't seem to merit an entire section if there is nothing unusual or interesting that distinguishes them from what is commonly required at U.S. colleges and universities. Engineering department

This section hjas been removed by myself and another editor. It is worded in a manner which strongly suggests ("At Hope we offer the kind of one-on-one attention that insures...") that this is copypasted from some college promotional material. This would then be a copyright violation and certainly fails to meet WP:TONE, for encyclopedic writing. It also gives undue weight to a single department - no other department has or should have a separate section - even older, more prestigious ones. Rmhermen (talk) 16:56, 28 October 2013 (UTC)

Agreed. Plus it cites no third party reliable sources and the photo of the three men only serves to emphasize the weight issues. --NeilN talk to me 17:43, 28 October 2013 (UTC)
It's copied from here with virtually no editing so it's a copyright violation. It's also much too long for this article. A shorter, more concise, and original contribution (or at least one that isn't copied nearly verbatim from a copyrighted source) might be a good addition to this article.
